Clinton, Obama clash at debate

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - .........

As Obama tried to defend his comments about Republicans and Ronald Reagan, Clinton interrupted and said she has never criticized his remarks on Reagan.

"Your husband did," said Obama, who has accused the former president of misrepresenting his record.

"I'm here. He's not," she snapped.
.............

...

Often speaking over each other, Obama and Clinton clashed over their legislative records. Obama questioned why the New York senator had voted for a bankruptcy bill that she later said she was glad hadn't passed, and Clinton criticized Obama for voting "present" on dozens of occasions while a member of the Illinois legislature.

"Senator Obama, it's hard to have a straight up debate with you because you never take responsibility for any vote," Clinton said to loud boos. "On issue after issue, you voted present ... Whenever someone raises that, there's always some sort of explanation."

Obama accused Clinton of playing dirty and saying anything to get elected, while Edwards joined Clinton in criticizing Obama for the "present" votes.

3. Bring the dirt out now
There is something to be said about bringing any dirt out now, as opposed to in October. When the Repubs try to bring it out in the General Election (when more people would pay attention), it will be old news.

23. I thought all three came off well
Previous debates, I thought Obama came off as milquetoast, but he did well tonight.

2. It was fun...
It was even more fun to see Edwards jump in to defend Hillary.

I thought it made Obama look like the novice on the stage.
We know Edwards doesn't like Hillary -- but it's clear to me that this "holier than thou" attitude of Obama's is starting to annoy everybody.

Barrack will face real fire power from the Republicans in the General Election if he were to win the nomination. They will not care if he is black -- and they will not care if the black caucus boos them. They will attack him ruthlessly.

This is the same party that wore purple band aids to their convention; blatantly spitting in the face of a military hero.

Barrack needs to toughen up or get off the stage.
Voting "present" won't save him from the Republican wrath.

4. Yet they have said nothing. It's personal bickering. It has nothing to
do with the issues people are concerned about. :dem:

10. Why don't more people understand that?
Seriously.

There are times in which Obama needs to learn the audacity of shutting the fuck UP.

And Hillary's no better.

17. My favorite part of the whole thing
was, after much protracted bickering from HC and BO, John Edwards asked, "Are there 3 candidates in this debate, or just 2?" Of course, there should have been 4 (Kucinich)

19. The ONLY person who came off looking even half way
decent was Edwards. I was embarrassed to be a dem with Hillary and Obama. Good Lord. Hillary actually got booed and I can see why. (sigh)

Together with Bill falling out of his chair at the MLK speech, not a good day. A friend of mine who is a rethug sent me a "LOL" email, and although I set her butt straight I still cringed.

7. hillary shines on health care
it has to cover everyone

obama's proposal allows free riders

if people aren't forced to get coverage, there are always some who won't, who will gamble, then wind up in the ER

a recent NY Times article talked about the increasingly long waits in the ERs....people who are cricially ill, cardiac patients, etc....cannot get examined for long periods of time

because the ERs are being used as primary care facilities by the uninsured

otherwise....it sounded as if Obama was floundering, groping for words, unable to powerfully and articulately state positions, respond to criticisms, etc....

he seemed to be folding.....

imho, his Regean remarks completely alientated me.....Paul Krugman's column summed it up nicely

24. obama's reagan remark
I can't understand how so many people have chosen to interpret in their own way his remarks on the 'reagan' years. Good grief...he clearly said that there are certain presidents, who ushered in a transformational period in american politics - not good or bad - just new and different than what was before. I disliked Reagan immensely - still do - but there is NO doubt that he rang in a new era of optimism and good feelings about the country as WELL AS new and different ideas on how to look at our lives. Empty to me...but maybe many of you reading these boards are younger than I am and don't remember. After Carter (who I like and admire) everyone in the country was embarrassed to be an American (probably like many of us feel today with what Bush has done with our image) - inflation was high, our military was nothing, hostage crisis, high interest rates...a mess. And along came Reagan with his 'morning in america' message - hope to get out of our stagnancy. and things DID change - some say for the better and they still look on him as one of the greatest presidents ever!

So...don't look into and analyze a few remarks these candidates make - they will goof at times and say something they later regret (such as 'reagan') 0 they learn from that and usually are extra careful. Obamba is not as clear in his words like Hillary is...she has the facts and her legislative plans totally under her belt - and much experience in campaigning - she's a pro. So was Reagan...belive me, he spun a story about what policies were so bad (democratic)

16. Hillary shines on healthcare?
Hillary wants everyone to purchase their own healthcare insurance. Obama was explaining about the fines people would have to pay if they didn't have the kind of coverage Hillary wants us to purchase. ..I didn't think he floundered at all.

I remember hearing (and seeing) Hillary say that we should all have insurance ID cards (proving we purchased coverage) before we could even get hired for a job. ...Talk about taking the expense of healthcare out of the hands of corporate employers.

20. I call BS on one statement made:
"cardiac patients, etc....cannot get examined for long periods of time because the ERs are being used as primary care facilities by the uninsured"
My father works ER, has for the last 10 years. If you come to get treatment for a cold "because you are uninsured" and someone comes in with heart attack symptoms, the heart patient gets priority. They practice the same triage procedures any Army medical station would- "treat the sickest first". If you are working on something simple, and a major problem comes through, attention WILL be redirected to the highest priority.

21. How does Hillary "shine" on Healthcare?
Making everyone purchase insurance that only props up the insurance companies? Uh huh.
