Crossing Mayor Giuliani Often Had a Price
Source: NYT

Rudolph W. Giuliani likens himself to a boxer who never takes a punch without swinging back. As mayor, he made the vengeful roundhouse an instrument of government, clipping anyone who crossed him.

In August 1997, James Schillaci, a rough-hewn chauffeur from the Bronx, dialed Mayor Giuliani’s radio program on WABC-AM to complain about a red-light sting run by the police near the Bronx Zoo. When the call yielded no results, Mr. Schillaci turned to The Daily News, which then ran a photo of the red light and this front page headline: “GOTCHA!”

That morning, police officers appeared on Mr. Schillaci’s doorstep. What are you going to do, Mr. Schillaci asked, arrest me? He was joking, but the officers were not.

...

“There were constant loyalty tests: ‘Will you shoot your brother?’ ” said Marilyn Gelber, who served as environmental commissioner under Mr. Giuliani. “People were marked for destruction for disloyal jokes.”

Wow, a must-read indictment against Rudy 9iu11iani. He sent government goons after anyone who crossed him, and I mean anyone! You won't believe these stories.

1. I loved this line:
Two private employers in New York City, neither of which wanted to be identified because they feared retaliation should Mr. Giuliani be elected president, said the mayor’s office exerted pressure not to hire former Dinkins officials.

I think you're safe, guys.

32. I'm hoping Rudy wins FL
because I want the Repubs to keep tearing each other apart and spending money. Spread the negativity. I don't want a clear winner on their side any time soon.

God forbid he gets put into the White House somehow...

2. Those kinds of stories proliferate about "Giuliani Time" in New York.
I realize there can be more than one side to any story. But the collective impression I get is of a man who is fiercely territorial, hyper-entitled, with the grace of a back alley thug.

I don't like this guy one bit. I liked Dinkins. I liked Mark Green. I like Freddie. I'll take anybody whoever ran against him over Giuliani and I hope Florida GOP voters knock his ruthless fanny into the deepest hole in the Everglades in this upcoming primary.

He's run one of the dumbest campaigns I've ever seen in my entire life, and I've seen one or two by now. He's bad news start to finish and I hope he drops off the national radar after a dismal finish in the Florida primary.

7. What you said!
He HAS run one of the dumbest campaigns in history. Leaning on the 9-11 thing was an obvious mistake from day one - and the more flack he got for it, the MORE he laid it on.

Like, what part of "this shit is turning people OFF" did he not understand?

Given his propensity for 'getting' the people who cross him, I wouldn't want to be one of his campaign advisors right about now ...

8. LOL! Hi, Nance. It's my good fortune to run into one of the most civil
tongues on "the internets" this evening, especially in the wake of what's being posted on these boards.

I completely LOVE the humor in your comments on Rudy. Also, you're right on with his advisors. I hope they have contacted the witness protection program and secured new driver's licenses, etc. The hardest part is getting the kids to use their new names.

12. LOL - especially if you give the kids new names ...
... that they hate just as much as the ones you originally gave them!
"Penelope! Ain't no way I'm going through life as Penelope! Think that one through again, dude."

I just finished an overnight transcript, so I missed the debate. So I come to DU looking for comments, and immediately see:

OBAMA Rocked!
Obama LOST IT - Edwards Kicked ASS!
Edwards is OUT - HILLARY STOLE THE SHOW!

Amazing how people can see the same debate, and come away from it having a completely different take on it - and yet, they STILL can't understand that not everyone is seeing their candidate in the same light they are!

God, I'll be SO GLAD when this process is over ...

14. "Penelope" !! LOL! And evidently a couple of the boys didn't care much for
"Grover" and "Slobadon."

Well, if you missed the debate, here's a synopsis, which mirrors your own perception already:

Obama, a sexist, wet-behind-the-ears opportunist, called Clinton a "malevolent witch who eats animal babies," and then John Edwards sprayed them both with neurotoxins before punching Wolf Blitzer in the nose.

It was quite memorable, as debates go.

17. Oh.My.God.
Thanks for what I have no doubt is a more than accurate synopsis!

It's actually being rerun right now, so I'm off to watch ... can't wait for the moment when Edwards bashes Blitzer in the nose!

13. Well, give him credit for postponing his death warrant until Florida.
He tried to campaign in Iowa and NH, but the more he campaigned the lower his numbers went.

So he pretended he wasn't even trying, so getting beat by Ron Paul didn't mean his campaign was dead.

But now they have him cornered in Florida.

38. What's most intriguing here about that STOOOOpid campaign he's running
is - what does this say about him as an executive, really?

If he's running a cockamamie campaign like this, where he finally suits up after the momentum train pulled out, WEEKS AGO, what does that say about his executive judgment and how he would run a White House, or a country? If THIS is how he manages things, if THIS is the kind of advice he takes to the bank, if THIS is the kind of decision-making he manifests, we're fucked if he wins. He'll be the kind of "president" who may actually accomplish the impossible: making dubya look good. And the petty vindictiveness and thuggishness that goes along with it, AND that home-wrecking strumpet he married, AND the cruel, sadistic - and VERY public - way he treated his ex-wife (announcing their break-up in a news conference, without bothering to talk to her in private first) makes him the worst of them in many respects.

Hey rudy - may your campaign be stillborn.

4. Wasn't there something about advertising on buses?
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 12:49 AM by grytpype
Didn't somebody run an ad on the sides of buses that was critical of 9iu11iani and he sought bloody revenge?

On edit: oh yeah, hee hee hee

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B05E7D9163DF931A35751C1A961958260

A Federal judge yesterday rejected Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's effort to remove bus advertisements that lampooned his style, saying that a Mayor who is in the headlines every day and who recently appeared in drag on national television ''cannot avoid the limelight of publicity -- good and bad.''

In the ads, New York magazine proclaimed that it was ''possibly the only good thing in New York Rudy hasn't taken credit for.'' That use of his name, the Mayor argued, violated his right to privacy and his right to protect his name from commercial exploitation.

...

Mr. Giuliani sharply criticized the judge's ruling and said he was considering personally suing New York magazine, calling it ''the only avenue left to me.''

...

The Mayor's harsh criticism of the judge and the magazine, along with his threat to sue, escalated a dispute that had essentially begun as a joke -- ''a little tasteful ribbing'' by the magazine, as its editor in chief, Caroline Miller, put it yesterday.

This guy is really dangerous. Can you imagine if someone like this got control of the US government and its security apparatus? It would make * look like a walk in the park.

I know he's doing really poorly, but he has deep ties to the Bushies and their election-fixing machinery. I won't be able to relax until this guy has officially bowed out. (Oh, god. It just occurred to me: If they have a brokered convention, he could sneak into the nomination that way.) :scared:

19. Another example: Christopher Brodeur
Christopher Brodeur was an outspoken critic of Giuliani and ... he was wrongfully arrested 6 times by Rudy and won anytime thus allowing him to run against Giuliani in the election for mayor. He lost of course because the M$M banned him from all debates...

Anyway he is on youtube as "touchingyou" with classics like:

Though made in 2005, I just saw this doc a couple days ago. I'd already known G was a slimeball of the highest order, but this doc sealed that opinion. G's mafia family background, strong-armed tactics and bigger-than-godzilla ego combine to make him a perfect minion for the Bush crime family and the Rethuglican party.
