She will step down on 31 March and will be replaced by John Donahoe, who is currently in charge of the firm's main auction business, eBay said.

The news came as the US firm posted a market-beating 53% rise in profit for the three months to December.

Ms Whitman has been lauded for turning eBay into a powerhouse in e-commerce. she will remain a director at the firm.

5. by allowing mega-dealers to run rampant...
...and encouraging large retailers to sell, and allowing pirated CDs to dominate. The policies for sellers have discouraged the small-time individuals that formed the flavor of the site. It used to be extremely profitable for many people who sold unique things to very appreciative collectors and buyers. Now it's largely a mass market. They should have segmented the site, if they wanted to introduce mega-dealers.

6. I agree....that the Power sellers are like the Wal-Mart
image of E-Bay. I don't buy from them because service sucks, products are junk and are not even a deal.

7. I completely agree.
I hardly ever go there anymore. And forget trying to sell anything hand-made there. The micro macrame earring I can sell at $35.00 each at a jewelry party sells 10 for $12.00 (mass-produced, nothing unique about them). I don't even bother anymore. If I wanted to go to a shopping mall, I'd walk to the one I live behind and I won't have to pay shipping.

Meg made them a boatload of money, but killed the spirit of the site.
