Counter-protesters silence demonstrators (at funeral of soldier killed in Iraq)
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 02:36 AM by ursi
Source: Reno Gazette Journal

About 150 people, including Patriot Guard members and supporters, encircled a handful of protesters near a Reno memorial service Saturday for a soldier slain Jan. 9 in Iraq.

The Westboro Baptist Church based in Topeka, Kan., announced this past week it would protest the memorial service for Staff Sgt. Sean Gaul held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in south Reno. The group says its protests highlight that God is killing soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to punish America for condoning homosexuality.

Danielle Fargo, who lives in Damonte Ranch, came with her children to support Gaul’s family. She said there were eight Westboro protestors “in a little knot” by the side of the road when she arrived early Saturday. But as the number of counter-protestors grew to at least 200, the picketers dwindled to three men holding signs.

“We came here to support our troops and to stand up against the hate,” Fargo said. One of her children held a sign that said, “God is love.”
“We want to show people that god is love, not hate,” Fargo said.
Walking along South Virginia Street just north of Bishop Manogue High School, three church members held signs saying “God hates fags,” “Don’t waste your tears,” and “We need more dead soldiers.”

Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 02:26 PM by pipoman
started in Kansas so there are lot of them around here, almost every biker you see regardless of their group has the patch. It is a great organization to kick a few bucks to. Some of the riders are DAV or just not real flush with cash and this pays some of their expenses to travel to these events as well as other expenses that these guys and gals incur...its a great cause that has been very effective in countering the Phelps shitbags.

We've seen the Phelps a-holes here too and just surround them and rev our engines. Loads of fun! Never violent or confrontational - it's a family event.

3. I sincerely hope the Phelps people meet Jesus
Soon and by means of a flaming bus wreck.

I want them to see the smile on Jesus' face as he pulls the lever for the trapdoor to Hell.

One day Phelps is going to wake up in his bedroom with a very angry Iraq vet holding a Ka-Bar to his throat.

6. I was just thinking that.
They "encircled" the protesters? How about "tarring and feathering" them? How about pushing them physically out of the area the way the body rejects disease-bearing germs?

This is yet another set of obnoxious right-wing louts who are allowed to get away with uncivil, un-American acts with no accountability and no pain. Kind of like the bush administration. They're asking for a punch in the nose, but nobody will give it to them!

20. They like to claim that they are democrats
On PAPER they may be democrats. Their ACTIONS convey a much different reality.

Read up on how the old man made his money. They like to brag that as a lawyer, Phelps took on civil rights cases. He did but according to some family members, he was a racist through and through.

17. The Phelps clan makes their living with lawsuits.
Beating the living shit out of the entire bunch with steel truncheons (which they would so richly deserve) would only enrich them and fund their loathsome activities for the next three generations.

So the counter-protesters were being smart, IMHO.

Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 09:13 AM by Pigwidgeon
What do you want to do? Turn him into a martyr?

Hell, no!

Let the "reverend" and his slaves march around at funerals making a spectacle of themselves. The more, the better. Everyone in America will see this, and it will only strengthen the resolve of those of us fighting for human rights in all its forms.

Nothing kills germs like sunlight.

On Edit: Yes -- counter-demonstrations are excellent. But not violence or hatred. We can and should make a stand for humanity and against hatred.

19. I know. Disgust with the Phelps clan is what unites us.
No decent person could approve the spectacle the hate-filled Phelps mob mounts at every tragedy -- including, if I recall correctly, at the funerals of those gentle, brave Amish schoolchildren who were slain over a year ago.

I don't know what is eating at the Phelpses' diseased little minds, but they will soon enough be in obscurity.

Normal people who are biggoted don't spend anywhere near their time an energy on what they hate. They don't want to have anything to do with what they hate.

58. I disagree
It is possible to hate and loathe something irrationally without secretly loving it. I fucking loathe broccoli, the nastiest shit in the universe. But there is no secret liking behind my hatred of it, I just fucking hate it.

It's extremely insulting to LGBT people when every single loathsome individual who hates them is called a "closet case", because it, whether intentionally or not, communicates the idea that only gay people can behave in that manner. This sort of hatred exists in the world and, yes, there are some cases where it may come from self-loathing, but the vast majority are just gross, horrible individuals.

22. Phelps and his band of screech-monkeys can be dealt with very
easily...all that needs be done is for a good sized group of people to just start laughing at them.

They have made money off of those who have confronted them physically, and that is not a good idea anyway, it just plays into their hands for the attention. 99.8% of the country would love to see these people beaten to a pulp, but they would get the attention they crave.

They exist to confront and berate, difficult to do if you are not seen as a threat...:)

They were here in my small city a few months back, I went to the burial, but they were at the church, and I didn't see them. I was told though, that the PR's drowned them out w/Harleys. They left post-haste after the service, the stench of their presence permeated the area for quite some time.

32. When Fred Phelps dies
His family is going to find a huge stash of gay porn amongst his personal belongings. There's no way in hell that man is straight, and I'm a straight man (also from Kansas) with absolutely no gaydar, but he sets something off.

I saw him on CNN a few years ago. He was wearing a white cowboy hat, but he had on a pink cowboy shirt - the kind that has two breast pockets with embroidery on and over them, and it looked like he was wearing lipstick and rouge. He for all the world looked like an aged drag queen who lost all style sensibility. Take Nathan Lane's character from the Birdcage, age him 40 years, and give him a lobotomy. If you could then inject liquid hatred into him, you would have Fred Phelps.

symbols nor do I have any such belief or inclination. It is important to distinguish that such things are sometimes part of the biker subculture but the originators of the PG are a biker club organized around a group of veterans. And again where are all the non-bikers? It is unfortunate that they picked that particular member to picture.

they have large flags and banners to cover up the "GOD HATES FAGS" , "WE NEED MORE DEAD SOLDIERS", "DON"T WASTE YOUR TEARS" signs and banners from the grieving families of deceased soldiers and other innocent victims don't you?

The picture in the OP article is ONE person participating in the counter protest to FUNERAL DISRUPTERS...there are thousands of bikers who spend their own money and take their own time to help comfort the families of fallen soldiers. Do you see anything which upsets your sensibilities in the pictures I posted? Maybe you are on the side of the "God Hates Fags" shitbags? How many counter protests against the Phelps asswipes have you participated in? :eyes::eyes:
