Brattleboro Town Officials Harassed Over Bush-Cheney Arrest Petition
Source: AP

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -- Town officials in Brattleboro are being inundated with complaints from across the country about a decision to let voters decide whether arrest warrants should be issued for President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Town Clerk Annette Cappy said the "nastiness" of the calls prompted the town office to stop answering its phones Monday.

One message from a Minnesota man said he'd like to see terrorists cut off the heads of some Brattleboro officials.

Brattleboro police said they will prosecute anyone whose messages cross the line and harass town officials.

Town officials say the petition that led to ballot measure complied with the law. Petition organizers say the measure was symbolic.

they think McCain is a "moveon.org" liberal. They think McCain is way to the left of Hugo Chavez.

They're very scary people.

81. WHERE IS THE BRATTLEBORO PETITION ?
I WISH THAT SOMEONE SENDS ME EITHER LINK TO OR THE PETITION
ITSELF.
I WOULD LIKE TO CREATE MY OWN OPINION. I DO NOT BELIEVE,THAT
OVER 400 PEOPLE IN ONE TOWN IS STUPID ENOUGH TO SUBMIT
PETITION WITHOUT HAVING IT BACKED UP BY SOME FACTS AND
RESEARCH ON THE SUBJECT.
I SEARCHED THE INTERNET TODAY ,BUT UNSUCCESSFULLY AND THAT
FRUSTRATES ME A LOT,BECAUSE IT IS THE CENTERPIECE OF ALL THIS
DEBATE AND I WANT TO READ IT TO FIND OUT,HOW THEY ARGUE TO
COME TO THEIR CONCLUSION.
I CERTAINLY SUPPORT THEM AS THIS IS VERY DARING AND UNIQUE
ATTEMPT TO EXERCISE FREE SPEECH. IF WE LET THE THINGS UP TO
THE RECENT GOVERNMENT,THIS MIGHT BE ONE OF THE LAST FREEDOM
ACTS OF THE PEOPLE. LAST 7 YEARS IT BEST TESTIMONY TO THAT...
I CAME MORE THEN 30 YEARS AGO FROM EASTERN EUROPE (ESCAPED)AND
WHAT I CAN SAY IS,THAT IT IS STARTING TO "STINK"
HERE LIKE THERE,WHERE I CAME FROM....AND SURELY NOT BECAUSE OF
THE PEOPLE...
READ FOR YOURSELVES: GOOGLE THIS: "WASHINGTON HIRES
STASI CHIEF"
THIS GOVERNMENT IS TAKING THIS COUNTRY IN WRONG DIRECTION.....
JUST SEARCH FOR STATISTICS ON TERRORISM IN LAST 7 YEARS.
OR ANOTHER GOOD ONE IS
THIS:http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=786048453686176230

AND TO THOSE,WHO DISAGREE WITH FACTS....WHAT CAN I TELL YOU
AND NOT INSULT YOU? WELL,YOU HAVE TO HELP YOURSELF,CAUSE YOU
HAVE PROBLEM....
WELL THANKS TO ANYONE WHO SENDS ME THE LINK OR THE
PRTITION....

Maybe they should get their towns to vote to arrest any officials from Brattleboro.

Sorry, but voting to arrest some one is a joke, no matter who does it. Brattleboro made themselves a laughingstock, now they get to deal with the flakes.

It's a real shame you feel that way.

No one should ever be made to feel like a laughingstock for
doing the right thing. Perhaps if our country had followed
its laws more closely since 2000, things wouldn't have come
to this.

Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 10:44 AM by LynnTheDem
Since only a truly sick MFer "American" would wish such a truly sick thing on other Americans (or any other human being, but ain't it ironic how they still squeal about HUssein "killed his own people" yet they want to see their own people murdered) and their rights to publicly hold their own opinions and uphold the laws, obviously that "American" who would "like to see terrorists cut off the heads of some Brattleboro officials" is a republican.

republican; as UN-AMERICAN as it's possible to get.

PS stupid MFing rightwingnut; thatmakes YOU a terrorist by your own bush-gawd's definition.

14. Right on Brattleboro..Keep standing..We thank you. Bravo!!!!
For the past seven years, we have watched as America has moved steadily back-wards. We have become a nation that is less free and less fair. We have become a nation that no longer values the right to privacy and has tragically retreated from our cherished foundations.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that, among these, are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the government; and, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it.

tend to be sociopaths. Plain and simple. It's not about God and country, it's about them and their inability to get along in a civilized manner and contribute something positive. Thinking that making terroristic threats is OK just demonstrates how far removed they are from reality.

I wish they would remove themselves far from the rest of us.

After 9/11 bush's approval rating was 90%. Now it's 30%. The ones who abandoned him are the ones with functioning brains. The diehards who still mindlessly support him are the worst of the worst, the true dregs, in concentrated form.

We have a "president" who is supported only by sociopaths and the top 1%. Some coalition!

44. Vermont Anti - Bush Petition Lambasted (Freeps attack VT)
Source: New York Times

...snip...

reads: ''Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities and shall it be the law of the Town of Brattleboro that the Brattleboro Police, pursuant to the above-mentioned indictments, arrest and detain George Bush and Richard Cheney in Brattleboro if they are not duly impeached, and prosecute or extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them?''

News of the measure made the rounds on the Internet, and soon people started calling and writing. The Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce got about 60 e-mails Monday, all of them negative, said Executive Director Jerry Goldberg.

...snip...

''Be American, not a sniffeling liberal town that sleeps under the shield of safety provided to you by your President,'' said another e-mail. ''Vacation to VT CANCELLED!''

The reaction caught town officials off guard, and left some workers on edge. ''We have some concerns about safety,'' said Town Clerk Annette Cappy. ''After reading some of these e-mails, you can't help it.''

...snip...

Juts left a comment:

I was born in Burlington 44 years ago and raised in Essex Junction. I currently live outside Toronto.

Bravo for your brave and moral stand against the cabal of war criminals currently living in the White House, who are gleefully running the US into the ground while stuffing millions into their own pockets with blood-stained hands.

As far as the hate mail, it's obviously just a few freepers (60 emails??) with nothing better to do when Rush is off the air. Bush's shitty poll numbers (which are likely inflated anyway) are enough to prove he has precious little support throughout the country. In short, fuck 'em.

KEEP IT UP!!!!

Seriously though, that sort of phraseology is scary in that it elevates one man in status above all others and imbues him with some sort of divine/super human characteristics. This is the same ilk of hero-worshippers that brought the world Mussolini, Hitler, Franco, Pinochet, Samoza, etc. etc. etc.

I wonder if centuries from now history will view democracy in much the same way as communism: a good idea in theory but one that could not in the end prevent its own demise.

> "a sniffeling town"?

Well, it is kind'a cold over there right now; there
probably are a lot of folks with sniffles of one sort
or another.

But not many snivellers.

62. 1) Travel to Brattleboro; 2) buy lunch; 3) tell some folks there why you did 1 and 2.
> How can we express our support for the petition?

1) Travel to Brattleboro;
2) buy lunch;
3) tell some folks there why you did 1 and 2.

Brattleboro's a nice place and it's cold enough
right now that you needn't fear running into any
nekkid people strolling around town. ;)

66. No wonder
The petition prompted Brent Caflisch to go to his computer in Rosemount, Minn. ''Maybe the terrorists will do us all a favor and attack your town next, our country would be much safer with several thousand dead wackjobs in Vermont,'' he wrote.

It went on to say terrorists could kidnap the three Select Board members who voted in favor, ''cut their heads off, video tape it and put it on the internet.''

Caflisch, who confirmed sending the e-mail, said Tuesday he did it out of disgust after reading about the measure on The Drudge Report.

This idiot lives in http://www.dumpjohnkline.blogspot.com/">Col. Klink's district.

83. It has always been a Vermont right to vote...
If that Minnesota man and others want to send threats that isn't a right that is breaking the law. I don't see them living in Vermont or voting in the elections there. If they don't like Brattleboro's right to vote they should move... to China... Dafar...
Or they can come to Vermont in the Winter with out protection...
