Source: The Kansas City Star

Margaret Truman Daniel, the only child of former President Harry S. Truman and his wife, Bess, died this morning in Chicago. She was 83.

The Truman Presidential Library in Independence confirmed Daniel’s death this morning on its Web site. The library said she had suffered a brief illness.

Born Mary Margaret Truman on Feb. 17, 1924, she was raised at 219 N. Delaware Ave. in Independence and, like her father, always considered the town her home.

2. and back then she was picked on by the opposition something awful

but she just ignored them and went on with her life, succeeding at what she did.

I admired that.

3. Her mystery novels were fun.

At least one was set in the White House IIRC.

6. She didn't really write the novels
A friend of mine in the book business told me they were ghosted.

I remember her wedding quite well. She got married on the same day as Grace Kelly. There was a lot of media coverage, but Grace's wedding had more.

7. It wouldn't surprise me, but it's interesting that the Wiki reference on this topic
leads to the right wing rag The Weekly Standard
Ghostwriting for celebs must be an interesting endeavor. I guess it's one way to be published and make a living in a tough field.

5. I mean no disrespect, but I must do this
"To Harry Truman."

"To Bess Truman. To Margaret Truman."

"To err is Truman."

9. K&R. How sad! Another important piece of history gone, and I know that she had children.
And she became a popular mystery author. Odd, that this isn't getting more coverage.:-(

10. Her first public singing recital resulted in an unfavorable review...
...from Paul Hume of the Washington Post:

"...she was extremely attractive on the stage... cannot sing very well. She is flat a good deal of the time.”

...to which President Truman replied in a letter to Hume:

"I have never met you, but if I do you'll need a new nose and plenty of beefsteak and perhaps a supporter below."

Rest in peace, Mrs Daniel...:(

12. A great lady and keeper of some very special secrets of the Democratic Party
as well as of top British political interests.

Her dignified low key approach to any self promotion included not bragging about some very remarkable British honors/medals awarded to her and to her mother Bess Wallace Truman.

She kept her counsel about myriad US political scandals despite many lucrative offers to tell all about top political families.

She was involved in much charitable work at the Truman Library & Museum included setting up the Bess Wallace Truman Foundation which at the last count had generated over $100 million in donations.

These have been dispersed on adult education bursaries including adult literacy projects, hardship funds for mature students and grants for disabled in higher education.

I knew her well from childhood onwards and my family donated memorabilia of her parents - film footage, photos, documents etc - the the Truman presidential foundation.

Her mother Bess Wallace Truman was my godmother.

I truly hope that Margaret's real legacy can now be made public.

About time the Brits published the citations accompanying her top gong awards.

I think many people at last would be able to have some extraordinary insights into what was really happening during the cold war years.

RIP Margaret, I shall miss you so much.

19. Memorial Service announced: Saturday 23 February at the Truman Library/Museum
in Independence, Missouri.

SNIP:

A memorial service for Margaret Truman Daniel is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Harry S Truman Library and Museum in Independence.

A private funeral for the family will be held prior to the memorial service.

Daniels remains will be interred in the Truman Library Courtyard, adjacent to her parents, Harry and Bess Wallace Truman.

During the service, the public will be admitted into the Museum galleries, where the service may be heard. Following the program, all will be invited into the Courtyard to pay respects and lay flowers at the gravesites of the Truman family. Those unable to attend may sign an online condolence book and view the service at a later date at www.trumanlibrary.org; individuals may also send condolences in care of the Truman Library.

The family has suggested that tax-deductible contributions be made in Daniels memory to the Truman Library Institute, nonprofit partner of the Truman Library, and the American Cancer Society.

16. First book I read on her father was her work
Published at the time of his death. Yes, of course, it was biased. However, it was fascinating reading getting the "inside story" of her parents. A wonderful book.

RIP, Margaret. Your dad was one of my heroes.
