APJERUSALEM - A majority of Israelis want Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resign in the wake of an inquiry that found “serious failures and flaws” in the management of Israel’s 2006 war in Lebanon, according to polls published Thursday, but Olmert insists he will stay in office.
Olmert emerged relatively unscathed from the final report of a government-appointed committee. While including tough criticism of the wartime political and military leadership, Wednesday’s report stopped short of blaming Olmert personally for what many Israelis saw as a stunning debacle that emboldened Israel’s enemies.
Analysts expect Olmert to survive politically. However, Thursday’s polls signaled that even if he holds onto office, he could have difficulty rallying public support for his attempts to sign a final peace agreement with the Palestinians by the end of the year.
A survey by the Maagar Mohot agency found 60 percent of Israelis thought Olmert should resign, while only 19 percent thought he should not step down. The poll questioned 474 Israelis immediately after Wednesday’s publication of the report and had a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.
