The Star-LedgerTwo prominent Congresional Democrats said today they want former Attorney General John Ashcroft to testify about his appointment last year by U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie to a position as a corporate monitor that could pay him at least $27 million.
In a letter to Ashcroft, U.S. Reps. John Conyers of Michigan and Linda Sanchez of California asked him to appear at a Feb. 26 House hearing on the regulation of corporate settlements involving monitors. The letter said Ashcroft has ignored informal inquiries from the representatives and that they hoped he would appear "without resorting to a compulsory process."
Mark Corallo, Ashcroft's spokesman, said, "We are reviewing the request."
The request suggested Congressional Democrats were trying to ramp up their examination of a process that has been largely unregulated and some say has wide potential for political favoritism.
