What kind of people beat something to death just because they don't know what it is?

Remember, * used to gleefully blow up small creatures as a child. Sticking firecrackers deep inside of them.

The kind of people that do this have no education. Those Indian fisherman probably have none what-so-ever, but those in our own country have no excuse at all.

They were from Bangladesh... not Indian.

coupled with poverty and poor education. Though, it's very well possible they killed it to get a kick out of it. Some people (regardless of race and nationality) are just ass holes.

To fear what is unknown is the most common of human traits. It is unfortunate and the heart of many of the world's problems.

That dolphin is a more highly evolved creature than those fisherman.

And if it HAD been a non sequitor, no answer should have been forthcoming.

The best part? The dolphin becomes endangered due to humans polluting the Ganges, then one gets trapped in a small section of the Ganges River due to that river's overuse by humans, and then it's beaten to death by humans! It's almost like we're actually trying to kill them all off.

conveniently "forget" that they killed one of the last Ganges dolphins. And frankly, they SHOULD be ashamed. :mad:

Likely thought they would get a good price at the fish market for this "strange/exotic fish". The idea of keeping it alive probably never occured to them.

If something's crying out when you hit it (like the poor dolphin probably was), that should be a pretty good goddamned clue that it's not a fish.

Lots of things cry out when you hit them that humans eat every day. What the hell does that have to do with whether or not these fishermen should eat it? You do realize they didn't grow up in Western culture with our understanding of animals. Your hate is wasted and ignorant.

and usually the two go hand in hand. These fishermen may have had a second grade education, if that. They may very well be illiterate as about a third of the population is in the region.

If only they had learned to read then they would have seen that
the river dolphin had a "Don't cave my skull in Bro!" badge and
that would have made *all* the difference ...

If they want to prevent this from happening again, they ought to make it punishable by death and distribute flyers everywhere -- something real simple, that even the barely literate or illiterate can understand. Big picture of a river dolphin, "DO NOT KILL -- YOU WILL BE EXECUTED" in large block print, and pictograms to that effect below the print.

I'm not so sure about "snuffing" these guys. A report in SF Chron yesterday detailed the decline and possible disappearance of the entire Salmon run. That was a run nearing 1 million fish just a few years ago. These salmon will never come back, we killed them!

more than likely. Hell when I was still working we were talking about being poor as kids and a friend was talking about her "pony" cart her dad had for her, and I shocked her by telling her "if we'd had a pony we probably would've eaten it".

It is not like it is a an educated person from the civilized world.

I read the story and it sounded to me like the fishermen believed this poor marine creature to be an aberration. They had never seen one before. It is for the most part blind and has exaggerated physical features. They clubbed it to death to insure that it would not breed. To them it was an abomination. And of course as so many of us knuckle dragging meat eaters know...clubbing fish on the head is the most expedient way of dispatching it. They took it to the museum possibly believing they might make some money...
The tragedy is that the Indian government does not see fit to give all their citizens a worthy education. And so you have primitive mores and superstitions holding sway in the lower classes.

Although I must say that the name calling and the hopes for bad things to happen to non evil human beings makes me feel that some people here are just as primitive.

GOD I hate humans sometimes.

I don't want to minimize the tragedy. But, any hunter or farmer will put down what they may see as an abomination so as to not contaminate their feeding stock. The Ganges is extremely murky and so these animals were rarely seen to begin with. These particular fishermen had probably never seen one.
I see this as a tragedy for the fishermen as well as the fish. The government of India should be ashamed of the level of poverty and ignorance they keep many of their own people in. They are not idiots. They have lived in a culture that has farmed the Ganges for thousands of years. And of course the level of poverty that they live is something that, perhaps, you cannot conceive of.

Brittany does appear to be very much "endangered" at this time.

even though you have no idea what their life is like, is a similarity in both instance.

if you dont understand destitution and illiteracy perhaps its best to educate oneself on such issues before taking on a holier than thou attitude.

I doubt they killed it because they didn't recognize it - clubbing (or "beating to death") is a pretty efficient way to kill a large fish quickly; most fishermen do it. My guess is they saw it trapped, didn't recognize it but hoped it was food, killed it, found out there were no buyers, and disposed of it. I'd be shocked if subsistence fishermen behaved any other way.

The museum thing is unclear - one paragraph says they took it to a museum and the next paragraph says they didn't. Even if they did, it doesn't mean anything nefarious. I could imagine that illiterate and uneducated people might think of a museum as 'a place for oddities that don't fit anywhere else.'

The only thing I take from this story is that the Bangladesh government ought to start some form of education program to inform fishermen what the dolphins are. If there were incentives for the fishermen to help protect the dolphins, so much the better. On a larger scale, improving the living conditions of all the villagers would help.

As for hunting down and killing the fishermen, or wanting them to suffer, I can only say :wtf:
