Chinese nuclear submarines prompt 'new Cold War' warning
Source: The Daily Telegraph UK

Tensions in the Far East could reach "Cold War levels" defence analysts warned, following evidence that China had secretly developed a major nuclear submarine base.

Satellite photographs passed to The Daily Telegraph this week showed that the secret base at Sanya on Hainan island will house up to 20 of the latest 094 Jin-class nuclear ballistic submarines that could be capable of firing anti-satellite missiles and nuclear-tipped cruise missiles.

The construction showed that China was “ramping up its operational capability” and developing a “blue water navy” that would challenge the dominance of the US in the Pacific, said Alex Neill, head of the Asia Security Programme at the Royal United Services Institute.

5. So What?
You want to spend more on the military budget to defend us from the new great evil empire, China?

That sounds an awful lot like the old cold warriers who need a new evil "communist menace" to wage war against.

It a growing capitalist economic power.

What the hell do you expect from them .... unilateral disarmament?

Let the United States and Israel begin nuclear disarmament and others may follow!

16. We need some of those quieter diesel boats with air propulsion
from Germany. The new U-Boats are ultra-quiet and good for coastal monitoring with sonar, which is where I believe the Chinese could sneak up on us.

18. Is there really no alternative to the Cetacea-damaging low- and other-frequency active sonar
for these purposes there, Submariner?

21. Yes, there are alternatives. Subs use passive sonar. Heat signatures, changes in thermoclines..

23. As Mookie stated
The subs are on passive sonar. Laying low quietly. Just listening.

It's the damn surface fleet that pings the shallows with the cetacean killing active sonar.

32. Thanks. I'm glad to see my thoughts on the matter confirmed
by (the very brave) professionals.

Active sonar could be described as largely unnecessary domineering macho stuff, then. A bit like wanting space-based systems with which to see everything that moves above sea level, then.

Lets have more submarines (of different sizes, including, I'm imagining, little boats and machines that could be deployed, silently, from surface vessels where required) instead, then, if absolutely necessary...

Peace. :hippie:

It's ironic that the commies managed to use capitalism against us.
More people in the government need to read The Foundation series.

There is more than one way to take-over an enemy.

33. I can see no reason why China would need to threaten the West,
nor much historical sign that it has ever wanted to, were it not for the West's threats (and actions) against China.

Attitudes (aggressive postures) have to change - and I mean, the West's.

29. Years ago, I worked for a company that supplied equipment to the Chinese navy.
The machine was a device for impact testing metals, and (at least at the time) it was the largest device of its kind.

They're building some big shit.

We, Americans, are put in such a suitation, by such bunch of Interest groups that every new ... is a treat to us !!! Why ????

Why can not we just be ... ???

This will definitly strech us and isolate us that we, the American people, the real ones, not those... will pay for it dearly.

and they like to trot this kind of news out at the proper time for maximum impact. It is getting about time you know for a new best enemy. The trouble though is that they will all have to be recalled from sea because of too much lead in the hull.

15. Why should other nations not have parity with our forces?
If we are alarmed at China upgrading its forces, perhaps we should enter into a serious discussion with them about all of us disarming our forces. Instead we assume that the USA should be the dominant military force on the planet and start growling at any other ape that threatens our silver back first ape status.

People please try to relax. China has had nukes for decades, and they now have a space program. Neither they nor us really want to annihilate each other so PLEASE don't run around screaming "terra terra terra". You only exacerbate the possibility of this actually causing problems.

Do we have to respond to every move of Every nation (self-respecting nation)??? Yey, because we have said " WITH US OR AGAINEST US".

Now, every self-respecting nation is working againest us !!!!

Now, we are paranoid. We are worried about China, Iran, Russia, EU, Brazil, etc.... Are we going to have one department to deal with each ??? What about CUBA, Venzuela, Zimbabwe.... ???

The Bushies are fighting a losing battle with American money; why should they care; they are profiting.

27. Let me guess: Chinese ballistic-missile submariners got tired of buying new seabags all the time
I knew a chief once who served on diesel boats. He told me that when the sub reached homeport, the first thing you did was to take your seabag to the nearest dumpster and throw it in, for everything in it smelled like diesel permanently. I can't imagine that Chinese mariners like diesel-scented underwear any more than our mariners do.
