Bust of Frank Zappa may be erected in hometown of Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Frank Zappa, who sang about "Plastic People," has been cast in bronze. Again.

In 1995, a quirky bunch of Lithuanian artists and intellectuals managed to erect a bust of the eccentric Baltimore-born rocker in downtown Vilnius, the capital of the former Soviet republic. Now, they want to place a replica in Zappa's hometown.

Saulius Paukstys, longtime president of a Zappa fan club, was in Baltimore today to pitch the Zappa bust to the city's public art commission. He and his group say the statue is already carved and they will pay to ship it to the U.S. as a present from Lithuania.

Zappa had no known Lithuanian ancestry and never visited the country, but his music was popular in the aftermath of the country's independence from the Soviet Union.

Zappa died in 1993.

Not bad for a mostly Italian guy ............

On edit, an update ...... the statue has been accepted by the Baltimore Arts Commission. So for, however, no location for it has been decided.

8. I got to see him twice on the Them or Us tour.
The first time was in the round at the Front Row Theater. I was less than 20 feet from the stage. Amazing performance from the entire band. I waved to Frank with an oven mitt on my hand and he waved back to me.

9. Have visited his park in Vilnius. Wondered "why there"....?
Heard his name, but never knew anything about the guy until we saw his park in Lithuania. Awesome country, beautiful city....pitiful history.

I've heard Frank Zappa on a couple clips, and I'm sure he would be disgusted with how low we have sunk in this country today.

He deserves recognition from what I have seen.

He also once served as a consultant to Czech President Vaclav Havel on trade, culture and tourism.

Pressure from the US (King Bush I regime) and James Baker forced Havel to withdraw the appointment.

18. He moved away from the B'more area when quite young

but we claimed him as our own, anyway. He always recognised our claim and was gracious about this, cracking on local affairs, the Birds, etc.

Whenever I hear "What's New In Baltimore?" it brings a tear to my eye, being on a self-imposed exile from the dying Bay.
