Gay Penguins: The most objectionable book in America
Source: Live News

The tale of a pair of gay penguins who adopt a chick has once again topped the ‘objectionable’ list in US libraries.

‘And Tango Makes Three’ is a children’s picture book published in 2005 about a family of penguins – with two fathers.

It is the most ‘challenged’ book in public schools and libraries for the second year in a row, according to the American Libraries Association.

The ALA defines a "challenge" as a "formal, written complaint filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness."

"The complaints are that young children will believe that homosexuality is a lifestyle that is acceptable. The people complaining, of course, don't agree with that," Judith Krug, director of the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom, told AP.

Other books hitting the Top Ten complained about include Maya Angelou's memoir ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,’ in which Angelou writes of being raped as a child; Mark Twain's ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,’ long attacked for racism; and Philip Pullman's ‘The Golden Compass,’ which is widely perceived to be pro-atheism.

2. Do the penguins actually have sex? If not, they're just roommates.
Or just like a heterosexual "sexless" marriage.

Featuring homosexual animals. I didn't hear any complaints then, but I think that was in the 90's. Y'know...before we turned back the clock?

11. The reason religious nutcases are so upset about Tango
Is that they feel betrayed by penguins after the movie, "March of the Penguins," was held up as such a wonderful, pro-family film.

It's their own fault for not paying attention to history. In the 1980s, Opus the Penguin and short-lived character Otis Oracle of the "Bloom County" comic strip were often facing off against each other in court or PTA meetings. One time it was concerning banning books, particularly "Rory's Field Guide to Penguins," which showed huge flocks of the birds living in open co-habitation causing Otis to declare that this depicted, "Penguin Lust at its most Vilest." (or something similar)

Tango is now a healthy female penguin who has paired with another female penguin, Tazuni, for the past two mating seasons.

OMG, religious conservatives are right... allow gay parents to raise a kid, and the kid will turn out gay!!!! This is hugh!!!!!111!

14. More 'Tango' background
When some friends were in New Zealand, they visited two different colonies of penguins that were being tended to by conservationists. At both places, conservationists pointed out gay couples (one M/M, the other F/F) and indicated they considered them a real asset. (And this was totally independently, no apparent script on the part of the conservators.)

As sometimes happens, a breeding couple becomes unable to care for its young (death of a partner or disinterest), and the conservationists place the baby penguin with the gay couple, who always take it on and raise it as their own. For "straight" penguin couples, it's hit-or-miss as to whether they'll take on a stray penguin -- so the gay couples were a real asset for helping to stabilize the colony population.

But, "as we all know, reality has a liberal bias."

30. This is why homosexuality has evolutionary advantage
In just about every animal species, there is an advantage to having a small pool of adults who are not biologically invested in their own offspring.

18. Tango was removed from our elementary libraries earlier this year
The superintendent removed the book from all elementary libraries based on a complaint from one parent, who claimed that the book promoted homosexuality and was inappropriate for young children (keep in mind that it's a storybook designed for readers age 4-8). The superintendent overruled the recommendations of two committees, who favored keeping the book available. I think he might have been trying to avoid any potential controversy, but if that's the case, the whole thing backfired.

We brought a lot of attention to the issue and were able to help restore the book when it was discovered that proper procedures had not been followed.

In one of the best school board meeting moments I have ever witnessed, a brave teacher ended a speech in support of restoring Tango to the library shelves by holding up Tango in one hand and the Bible in the other and saying that the values in here (Tango) are the same values in here (Bible). She got a huge round of applause!

The most important thing to do in these situations is to publicize the fact that a book has been banned or removed. That is, if you can find out about it. If someone hadn't tipped off the Washington Post, we probably wouldn't have found out about Tango being restricted.

Most parents do not want books restricted or removed. They don't want other people making decisions like this for their children.

29. Homosexuality is NOT a lifestyle that is acceptable
That is because homosexuality is not a lifestyle at all, any more than being male is a lifestyle or being left-handed is a lifestyle.

Now, Talibangicalism, THAT is a lifestyle. And not a lifestyle I find acceptable.
