NY Times, Washington Post Confirm Arianna's Story That McCain Did Not Vote For Bush
Source: Huffington Post

On Monday, Arianna reported that John McCain told her he had not voted for George W. Bush in 2000. Today, both The New York Times AND The Washington Post published articles with sources confirming John McCain had indeed told Arianna and others at an event that he did not vote for Bush in 2000.

From The New York Times:

Did Senator John McCain not vote for George W. Bush in 2000?
That question has kicked up a minor ruckus in political circles this week as Arianna Huffington and the McCain campaign have traded he-said, she-said barbs...

Now two other guests at the same dinner, given by the actress Candice Bergen, at her home in Beverly Hills, say they heard much the same thing as Ms. Huffington. Both of them, the former "West Wing" actors Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff, were asked by Ms. Huffington to speak to The New York Times. Mr. Whitford said he would be supporting the Democratic nominee and had donated to Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama; Mr. Schiff is supporting Mr. Obama.

From The Washington Post:

In separate phone interviews, Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff -- both of whom starred in the television political drama "The West Wing" -- said the senator made the remarks after he spoke at length about his reservations about Bush becoming president. Liberal blogger Arianna Huffington first wrote about the incident Monday, asserting neither McCain nor his wife Cindy backed Bush in his first presidential bid, and the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that a woman who was also at the dinner confirmed Huffington's account, though she declined to give her name. ...

"He was going on and on about how horribly unqualified and untested Bush was, how the campaign had attacked his family," said Whitford, a registered Democrat. "Someone said, 'If he's so terrible, why did you support him?'"

McCain replied that as a member of the GOP, Whitford added, he always intended to back the party's nominee. Then, the actor said, someone asked McCain whether he had cast a vote in favor of Bush.

"He put his finger up to his lips, shook his head and mouthed, 'No way,'" Whitford said.

1. This is a gift for McCain.
We try and associate him with Bush and now Huffington goes and gives him an out. How coud he be Bush's obsequious toad if he didn't even vote for him.

9. It is not. McCain has his head so far up Bush's butt right now
That this makes McCain look like a two-faced opportunist who will say or do anything just to further his own career.

24. Or, at best, forgetful.
That would be pretty poor memory, if he can't remember who he voted for president.

13. No, It's Not....
... as he appeared in the news yesterday lying directly to the cameras about this. I hope Obama's people are making a commercial out of McCain's habit of bending the facts depending on whom he's trying to spin. They should have a nice little collection by now.

17. Nope
It proves McCain is a liar and a man who will sacrifice his honor, family and his dignity to get elected.

18. Wrong. He tried to impress a bunch of Holly wood Libs by trashing Bush
that's the story here. Did he vote for Bush? Who knows - but that's not the point. Those at the dinner are clearly telling the truth about what St. John said to them. So he goes to the heart of the liberal beast and cozies up to them by dissing Bush. He hasn't denied saying these things - only stated that he voted for Bush. He was kissing up to the Hollywood Libs and that's what we should be pushing here to weaken him with his base.

3. And now he's stuck
because he can't even admit to it, although everybody knows, or feel, it is true. That makes him a liar instead of a normal guy who could not digest the repugnant maneuvers of the asshole. Net loss.

4. Sorry but this particular piece of dirt is actually a diamond
Unrepentant Rethugs may continue to publicly prop up Monkey Boy, but everyone knows in his or her heart of hearts that the Dim Son is an unmitigated disaster and thus will actually respect McCain more for the fact that he didn't vote for Bush.

Of course, if they need a quick antidote from that momentary insanity of respect, there's always this:

Disgusting on just so many levels

Once you are in the voting booth no one knows for sure. At least I hope they don't.

This won't play well with his base.

8. Just means he is not stupid - right?
It is not going to help him - not with the 20 whatever % of people that still don't "get it"

Oh - I never thought mccain was a bad mad - just the wrong one.

I think he is decent - as far as politicians go -which is not much.

I don't think he has beady little eyes like b**h does - I don't.

I also don't think he should be our president

It's not that he didn't vote for Jr. because he didn't agree with his policies. That's been made very clear in this election cycle. He and Cindy were both bitter about all the dirty tricks that sunk the straight talk express. They got screwed so bad that there was still a bad taste in their mouths on election day. The lyin was where he made his mistake. This would have been a nonstory, maybe atleast kept him in the news even. Now though, it's proof that he'll lie when it suits him to.

Cross off the straight-talker from his persona. And while you're at it, the maverick status too, for having his head up bush's ass the last 6 years.

12. Reality of the Conservatives
Edited on Sat May-10-08 12:20 AM by Baby Snooks
The conservatives, as opposed to the neo-con artists, in Southern California and Arizona did not vote for Bush. They didn't like his message so to speak. Too bad the party of conservatives didn't pay attention to the actual conservatives. They may not vote for McCain either. They would have preferred he remained in the race in 2000.

They are an unforgiving lot. They took a good look at the "dynasty" when their electric bills went through the roof. And were not amused by the energy traders at Enron and their little jokes. And are definitely not amused by the enormous national debt created by the "war on terror" as well as the collapsing economy. These are not corporate types. Most are entrepeneurs who built their own businesses and their own fortunes. And still believe in "by the people, for the people."

Some might actually vote for Barack Obama. Simply because they know that both John McCain and Hillary Clinton will simply be part of the "dynasty" that has destroyed this country.

And all of them are probably enjoying the hypocrisy of John McCain being pointed out before the campaign even begins. And he is a hypocrite who probably would have done better to have ignored George W Bush rather than embrace him. But his hypocrisy may help put Barack Obama in the White House.

14. This is good news for us
Those 28%'ers ... McCain needs them. He needs them badly if he is to win. He cannot win without the Repub base--and they already don't trust him. Are our memories so short that we've forgotten Anthrax Annie et al who threatened to bolt the party if McCain was the nominee?

This is excellent news; it divides the base and, for the un-fucking-bat-shit-insane rest of the world it reveals him to be a liar and a flip-flopper. (Actually, it is just further proof of his flip-flopping.)

16. The RW base, which is who McCain needs are hating McCain
more and more everyday.

It is not enough to have Lieberman on a leash.

I guess that he's counting on Hillary's base who say they will vote for the guy who wants pro-lifers on the Supreme Court.

They simply quoted two liberal Obama donors who Arianna asked to come forward after being under fire by McCain and his aides.
