Bin Laden marks Israel anniversary with combat vow
Edited on Fri May-16-08 06:45 AM by edwardlindy
Source: Yahoo News UK

"We will continue, God permitting, the fight against the Israelis and their allies ... and will not give up a single inch of Palestine as long as there is one true Muslim on earth," the leader of al Qaeda said in the latest message, posted on an Islamist website on Friday.

He said Israel's anniversary celebrations were a reminder that it did not exist 60 years ago, and had been established on land seized from Palestinians by force.

"This is evidence that Palestine is our land, and the Israelis are invaders and occupiers who should be fought," he said.

The Saudi-born militant noted that decades of peace initiatives had failed to establish a Palestinian state, and said the West sided with Israel.

1. here they go, dragging him out again,
Edited on Fri May-16-08 06:50 AM by notadmblnd
"Friday's message, which lasted about nine minutes, was posted on a website commonly used by al-Qaeda."

does anyone know what commonly known website this is? I'd like to see the message and the website because I highly doubt one exists.

8. I found this on CBS news:
"The message, downloaded by CBS News from the prominent jihadist Web forum El Ekhlas, did not include any new images of the al Qaeda chief."

So I did what any responsible DUer would do.... I Googled it...

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADBF_enUS253US254&q=El+Ekhlas

It looks like a website or company that sells jars, oranges, and ... music?

11. El Ekhlas means "to be faithful"
It is going to be hard to sort out El Ekhlas on the internet, in Arabic it means "to be faithful" sorting those results out are going to be difficult.

I wouldn't recommend going crazy with those google searches though, with internet monitoring and all you could be the next wiretap victim. Welcome to the United States of Fear.

12. Lots of problems make your search non-trivial.
First, transliteration. El-Ekhlas seemed unlikely. Al-ekhlas is in the running (but note that the 's' isn't a normal 's'--it's an 's' that backs and pharyngealizes the 'a', at least in MSA).

Transliteration is a bitch, and I think the guy who did that website's name for the press botched it. Most dialects don't let 'a' and 'i' merge. The word for 'the', "al", comes out as "el", but since the noun is "ikhlaaS" that means "ekhlas" is confusing. It merges 'a' and 'i' too much. The way I transliterate for the net--keeping the two things that come out as 's' separate, and preserving the length of the vowels--is dorky looking but understandable to American linguists just fine.

Al-Ikhlas seems to be the winning term, I think, for a Google search, because the site doesn't provide its own transliteration: Arabic only, as far as I can tell.

That gets you to www.ek-ls.org . Various jihadnik-watching sites also point to that page. It's in Arabic; my Arabic isn't good enough for reading yet.

Now, I've seen reports that one such anti-jihadnik site "took down" the ek-ls site, but my browser seems to find it just fine, so maybe the forum found a new home--Islamist sites are frequently shut down and just put up with another host. It's also possible that the domain name was snatched up by another group and the Islamist forum kept its name but is housed under a different domain name.

An fluent Arabic reader should look at the site and weigh in.

5. Bush Tells Barnes Capturing Bin Laden Is 'Not A Top Priority Use of American Resources'
Edited on Fri May-16-08 07:12 AM by UpInArms
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/09/14/barnes-osama/

Weekly Standard editor Fred Barnes appeared on Fox this morning to discuss his recent meeting with President Bush in the Oval Office. The key takeaway for Barnes was that “bin Laden doesn’t fit with the administration’s strategy for combating terrorism.” Barnes said that Bush told him capturing bin Laden is “not a top priority use of American resources.” Watch it.

(go to link and watch the video)

Bush’s priorities have always been skewed. Just months after declaring he wanted bin Laden “dead or alive,” Bush said, “I truly am not that concerned about him.” Turning his attention away from bin Laden, Bush trained his focus on Iraq — a country he now admits had “nothing” to do with 9/11.

Capturing bin Laden, as Rep. Nancy Pelosi recently pointed out, will not necessarily make America safer because it would come five years too late. Yet, capturing or killing the man responsible for 9/11 should remain a high priority.
