RIYADH (AFP) — The White House announced major new cooperation agreements with Saudi Arabia on Friday as US President George W. Bush made his second visit to the oil superpower this year.

The agreements cover cooperation on civil nuclear power and protecting the kingdom's oil infrastructure which has come under attack by Islamist militants.

"The Saudis bear a special responsibility for protecting key energy facilities of global importance and the world benefits from their abundant energy supplies," a White House statement said.

"Our global economy depends greatly on Saudi Arabian energy. The United States has a keen interest in helping the Saudis protect their energy infrastructure against terrorism, as demonstrated by the unsuccessful terrorist attack against the kingdom's Abqaiq plants in February 2006," it said.

2. He is there to ask the Saudis to turn up the spigots.

But they CAN'T. They just finished a multi-billion drilling program (plus tertiary recovery program) which was to add 25% to their capacity to pump oil... it has added 4 percent. Not only that, but intense recovery projects like steam injection tend to increase production BUT reduce the overall productivity of a well by cutting it's useful life. Produce more now only to see the collapse of your oil field much earlier than anticipated.

Since the Saudis took over the management of their oil fields back in the mid '80s, there has been a great deal of speculation that the Saudi government routinely overstates their oil reserves, by some estimates now about 50%.

We may be heading rapidly to a time of precipitous worldwide production declines as we head down the slope of peak oil.

4. The Saudis can protect their own infrastructure.
I don't see why we need or would want to put our hands in it. They have plenty of money and other resources to secure the facilities.

13. Read "Confessions of an Economic Hitman"
It has nothing to do about actually protecting them per se but trading their oil for our military toys.

the 17 hijackers a joint civilian 'nuclear' power program? Fuck, 17 OF THEIR COUNTRYMEN BOMBED THE US AND HE WANTS TO COOPERATE WITH THEM ON A 'CIVILIAN' NUCLEAR POWER DEAL?

What is it that I don't understand about this mess? That bin Ladin is Saudi? Nope, got that. That the Saudi Royals financed the local crazies just so they'll leave them alone? Nope, got a good grasp on that one too. That the whole royal family are a bunch of corrupt thugs who victimize their own countrymen (ala Saddam)? No, that idea registers.

Something must be escaping me. For the life of me I just don't understand these people.

edit: Why do we want to help the Saudi's out with their nuclear program? Won't this just piss Israel off anyway?

10. so the saudis who supplied most of the 9/11 hijackers and are
well known to give to terrorist organizations are allowed to have nuke energy and probably even nuke warheads at some point, get a big sloppy one from moron*, yet Iran who expressed sarrow for 9/11 and pledged help and support and had nothing at all to do with al queda and 9/11 gets put on morons* enemies list for wanting to give their nation nuke power because their oil production is peaking.

just trying to get clear the very apparent stupidity we have to deal with in morons* hobbsian world view.
