Obama picks up delegates in Kan., Md., Nev.
Posted: 2008-05-17 17:24:50

WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama inched closer to securing the Democratic presidential nomination with delegate pickups in Nevada, Kansas and Maryland.

In Nevada, Obama stole a delegate from rival Hillary Rodham Clinton by drawing more supporters at the state Democratic convention Saturday.

A vote of more than 2,500 convention delegates broke 55-45 percent in Obama's favor, giving Obama 14 of Nevada's 25 pledged delegates to the National Democratic Convention in Denver this summer to Clinton's 11.

The shift is a gain of one pledged delegate for Obama over the split calculated after the state's January caucuses.

Faced with a vocal crowd of Obama backers, Bill Clinton all but abandoned typical campaign rhetoric. He mentioned his wife's candidacy only briefly, and instead focused his comments on a call for party unity against the Republicans in November.

"Don't you forget why you came here. You did not go to all this trouble to have an argument with each other," Clinton said. "The argument is necessary so we can pick the best president and the most electable one. Those are the only two things that matter ... After that, we have to get the show on the road, folks. We have a country to change and a future to secure."

4. No one "stole" a delegate
What horrible reporting.

The numbers from the caucus are always "soft" numbers until the convention.

13. They're hardly one and the same
Pledged delegates are just apportioned by the news media based on their analysis. Those pledged delegates don't endorse a candidate publicly on election night. Superdelegates on the other hand CAN endorse ahead of time.

15. Stealing would be trying to convince a delegate to switch, even when they don't want to...
or the idea isn't necessarily his or the other delegates for that state. Stealing is approaching a pledged delegate and saying, look, I know you're about to vote for the opponent and that you're pledged to do that, and the other delegates expect you to do that. But I don't care. I want you to vote for me. Please. Come on. Vote for me and not for the candidate you're pledged to. Come on, now. Please. Pretty please. The thief presses even harder.....I can tell you're thinking about it....sounds like you're on the fence. Come on, now. You know my candidate is better. Be part of history. Vote for my guy and not for yours. Remember, your candidate has been caught shall we say....stretching the truth a time or two? You know your candidate is not going to win, anyway.

There is no indication that Obama's people even asked, much less coerced any pledged delegate to switch to Obama.

10. Probably not the best phrasing...
...but amusing in that Senator Clinton has been arguing that even the pledged delegates, those apportioned from a primary / caucus vote, are not static and they can change their minds and support whichever candidate.

Funny that this delegate decided to support Obama.
