George Bu sh to visit UK

Source: YAHOO NEWS

US President George Bush is to visit Britain next month during a tour of European nations, the White House has announced.

The trip, from June 9 to 16, is intended to mark the 60th anniversary of the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe after the Second World War and the Berlin Airlift.

Mr Bush will also visit Germany, Italy, the Vatican, and France, as well as attending the annual US-EU summit in Slovenia.

The trip follows Prime Minister Gordon Brown's visit to the United States last month.

The phrase "as welcome as a turd in a swimming pool" comes to mind.

1. I was just thinking that
I can't come up with ONE COUNTRY whose citizens would be excited by a Bush visit. Compare to when Kennedy would make appearances.

He is hated by the world.

30. Too bad it seems he's not visiting Spain
(which did receive Marshall Plan funds - under Franco) but is visiting UK (which did not).

Remember Pinochet.

35. No, UK got lots, Spain got nothing from the Marshall Plan
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Plan

When the Marshall proposals were announced, I grabbed them with both hands. I felt that it was the first chance we had ever been given since the end of the war to look at European economy as a whole.
Ernest Bevin, Foreign Secretary
Great Britain, 1945-1951

Marshall Plan Countries

Almost all European nations outside the Soviet bloc were members of the plan from the beginning. The two exceptions were Spain, which as a dictatorship under Franco was not invited to participate, and West Germany, which was under Allied occupation and did not become a full member until 1949, after a significant measure of self-government had been restored.

Spain was dealt with separately, because of Franco.

18. You'll have to raise that issue with this lot
The stop the war coalition, who are the ones behind most of the anti-Bush protests.

http://www.stopwar.org.uk/

War criminal George Bush will visit Britain during his European tour in June from 9-16 June. His 2004 visit was met by the largest protest ever held on a weekday in Britain. This visit should be no different. Since his election over 1 millioon people have died in wars which now spread from Afghanistan to Somalia. Stop the War will organise a protest. More details soon.

Mind you, I don't reckon turnout will be anything like as good as last time. The main story at present is who'll be succeeding Bush and the political party that the Stop The War Coalition spawned (The RESPECT Coalition) has split in two with the Socialist Workers Faction and the George Galloway/Islamic faction going their seperate ways.

37. And I'm thinking of the people who make the floats
The people who will be marching, how many of them are likely to turn out and whether the different factions will actually be speaking to each other anyway!

38. You have an excellent point
about the conflict between varying factions and the impact that will have on any protest....but I was just reducing his visit to a bottom-line positive (silver lining, so to speak)...and the only positive I could find really (creative floats). Because I can't think of anything positive to say about a Bush visit.

4. That's not quite as odd as it might seem
Sure works with Israelis :

The government is considering weakening laws designed to capture alleged war criminals and torturers who enter Britain, after pressure from the Israeli government, the Guardian has learned.
The changes would bar individuals from seeking international warrants for the arrest of people suspected of serious human rights abuses. The government has confirmed that Israeli officials have lobbied for changes in the law, which has kept some of their military officials away from Britain in case there should be an attempt to arrest them.

The proposals follow Israeli anger after an attempt was made to arrest one of their senior retired generals, Doron Almog, at Heathrow last September. He was tipped off that police were waiting to arrest him for alleged war crimes in Gaza. He stayed on the El Al plane and flew back to Israel. The warrant was issued by Bow Street magistrates, central London, after an application from lawyers representing Palestinians who say they suffered because of the Israeli general's alleged illegal orders.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/feb/03/humanrights.foreignpolicy

Law has yet to be changed to the best of my knowledge.

7. In a truly just world
In a truly just world, there would be nothing unusual about arresting a sitting head of state suspected of war crimes with as much public evidence against him as there is against Mr. Bush.

6. Bush visit to UK
The question arises, is the reason Bush is visiting the UK to keep them informed of his plans to attack Iran? First there was Israel and Saudi Arabia, now the UK. There is no other reason for him to make a personal call, other than to give them secret information to Gordon Brown one-on-one.

I can't imagine that the Marshall Plan or the Berlin Airlift is anything Bushco would celebrate. They both reek of diplomacy, I mean, appeasment.

Is there some diplomatic rule saying you can't have all the visits going one way??

42. No, he's been here before
Just swanning around being a bigshot.

There was one occasion where the Queen was definitely Not Amused after his entourage managed to cause a lot of damage and disruption to the palace quarters where they stayed. Just like a bunch of teenage vandals, except that they wouldn't be put up in a palace in the first place!

Anyway, we could well do without the wonderful treat of having Bush around.

I recall reading that LeCarre was strongly opposed to the Iraq war and never missed a demonstration.

And unlike Bush, LeCarre actually has some grasp on how the world works.

Maybe he's just saying goodbye to his foreign cronies while still in office, what with the war-crimes-foreign-indictment problem he will face abroad once he leaves the White House.
