McCain to meet possible running mates
Source: MSNBC/NYT

Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, on Friday is scheduled to meet with two Republican governors who have been prominently mentioned as potential running mates, according to Republicans familiar with Mr. McCain’s plan.

Charlie Crist, the governor of Florida, and Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, have both accepted invitations to meet with Mr. McCain at his home in Arizona, according to Republican familiars with the decision. One Republican said that Mitt Romney, a former rival of Mr. McCain for the presidential nomination — is also expected to visit him this weekend. Mr. Romney’s advisers declined to comment.

Mr. McCain, after a week of campaigning, is heading home on Friday for three days without a public schedule. His campaign declined to comment on the meetings.

Another governor who has been prominently mentioned as a strong contender to run with Mr. McCain, Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, is not going to Arizona; his associates said he had a wedding on Saturday.

3. Crist is too centrist.
And has absolutely perfect hair and is not married. I'm not sure the Pub base would stand for Crist as VP, when McCain is already too centrist for a lot of them.

This could get interesting.

6. In my opinion, Crist is the only real possibility
That twerp from Louisiana has only been governor since January and barely meets the age requirement for the presidency. McLame would look like a hypocrite for criticizing Obama's lack of experience while choosing someone like that to be his No. 2.

McCain to Meet 3 Possible Running Mates
By ADAM NAGOURNEY

Senator John McCain is planning to meet this weekend with at least three potential Republican running mates at a gathering at his ranch in Arizona, suggesting that he is stepping up his search for a vice president now that the Democratic contest appears basically decided, according to Republicans familiar with Mr. McCain’s plans.

Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts and a one-time rival for the Republican nomination, have all accepted invitations to visit with Mr. McCain at his ranch in Sedona, these Republicans said.

After a week of campaigning, Mr. McCain is heading home on Friday for three days without a public schedule. His campaign described this as a social weekend that would include a number of couples, and — as has been its policy it declined to discuss any aspect of the vice presidential search.

“We don’t talk about the V.P. selection process,” said Steve Schmidt a senior adviser.

but it would secure Florida for Mccain and he could focus on other states.

16. That's What Scares Me
Crist is very popular here in Florida. He's moderate on most issues. If McCain picks Crist and wins it will double suck for the Sunshine State. Not only will we have a third Bush term for our country, but Florida's current Lt. Gov (who is really right wing) would become our governor. And we thought it was bad under Jeb.

20. I agree about Romney, but Jindal should not be underestimated
He's highly intelligent, has lots of political charisma, and his whole future is still ahead of him. He's a Rhodes Scholar whose family immigrated to the US from Punjab...his biography sits well with working people.

We should be analyzing him, not dismissing him.

22. I agree with you...but do you think that Jindell could pull that
Neocon vote? We must never underestimate our opponants.

As far as I am concerned he is a right wing tool....no better than the rest.

26. Good question
My guess is that the neocon vote is not as big as the potential independent-vote gain McCain will get as he leans more toward the center in the election. Jindal appeals to the right-wingers more because of his personal biography and characteristics than his political views, although he's certainly in their sweet spot there, too. Anti-abortion, anti-stem cell, pro-offshore drilling, etc.

Jindal's youth and vigor, and his obvious future potential, provide silent reassurances to those with questions about McCain's age. Party leaders look at him and see who will be running in 2012 or 2016.

Florida is in the shitter - Crist is no doubt looking to bail out now before he gets the blame for the state's myriad ills.

15. I don't think he'll pick any of them.
They don't help in any key battleground areas and they all have pretty thin resumes.

My money's still on the Huckster.

27. McCain is already ahead in Florida without Crist.
Plus, the rumors that Crist is gay could develop into a rather large scandal.

23. It's going to be Romney
McCain needs to shore up the conservative base, and Romney would do that. Romney will bring in the fundraising dollars that McCain is sorely lacking. Out of all the Republicans in the primaries, I think Romney has still outraised McCain.

29. McCain looking at 3 minorities , a Mormon, South Asian and Gay
this might just be an attempt to get people within these communities to view him positively.

with all the Mormon stuff in the news i don't see why he would pick Romney. and would the stupids in his party go for a guy that "looks like a terrorist". Charlie Crist would probably be limited in his personal life , would he really want to do that for 4-8 years. although the wingnuts are usually willing to look the other way as long as they support gay bashing .
