CN8 fires Barry Nolan over Bill O’Reilly protest
Source: Boston Herald

CN8 has fired veteran TV journalist Barry Nolan for publicly protesting the decision by the local Emmy Awards to honor Fox News blowhard Bill O’Reilly.

Nolan tells MediaBiz he was fired Tuesday following a two-week, unpaid suspension.

“I knew going in that there was serious risk that I’d lose my job,” Nolan said yesterday, “but nobody likes it when people tell them to stifle, not even Edith Bunker.”

A CN8 spokeswoman issued this statement: “Effective May 20, Barry Nolan is no longer employed by CN8, The Comcast Network. Backstage will continue to air weeknights at 8:00 p.m. with host, Sara Edwards, and its talented team of reporters and contributors.”

Before the May 10 awards, Nolan sent e-mails to industry colleagues encouraging them to write to the Emmy governors - if they shared his opinion - and let them know “this is an appalling choice for an honor.”

“He’s delusional,” Nolan said of O’Reilly, a former Boston TV anchor. “He’s a man that mangles the facts.”

3. We need more journalists to start talking about all the lies they tell...
or that their colleagues tell.

Enough pretending that they're respectable.

Maybe eventually it'll be the liars who get fired, and not those who point out who the liars are.

15. The Inter-connect between the journalists that get hired
And their willingness to represent the Military Industrial point of view is quite a tight one.

I imagine before any journalist even gets asked to interview for one of the major news sources, that they already know whether you will lie or not.

Little things like whether you belonged to the Young Republicans while you were on campus - those types of thing give them the clues.

31. Comcast controls 27% of cable market...
...and, by chilling content in this manner (firing journalists who break through tacit boundaries of the permissible), has tremendous power to shape the political opinions of the casually minded. Media mega-mergers was/is part of the strategy of the ruling class and is in great part responsible for why the U.S. public sits on the sidelines while "great men" make decisions adversely affecting their lives.

8. Here's my letter.
Bessie and Gary,

I was flabbergasted to learn of your decision to fire Barry Nolan, and even more stunned to hear of your moronic nomination of Bill O'Reilly for an Emmy. You've instantly lost any credibility you might have had as a legitimate, impartial news source. Bill O'Reilly is one of the worst, partisan, fact-ignoring, hate-mongering blowhards on television, and it's incredible that any network would allow him access to the airwaves, as his mindless codswallop isn't worth the electrons it's broadcast upon. It's even more jaw-dropping that someone could nominate him for any kind of award and still show his/her face in public without collapsing from the crushing burden of shame.

I guess Comcast doesn't really subscribe to ethics and journalistic integrity and all that namby-pamby truth stuff.

"Bessie and Gary" are Bessie Tsionis and Gary Meuse, listed as producers of Backstage. Their website is www.cn8.tv.

Thanks for writing it and thanks for posting. Would like to think it would get results, but if it gets their attention even minimally, that would be reward enough. Whatever, good for you for writing and expressing what I know thousands of us feel each and every day we DON'T watch Billo and wonder about the sanity of those who do.

21. Thank you.
I'm cynical enough that I imagine nothing is really affected by writing, but it's cathartic. Just like bashing my head against the wall sending email after email to my neocon state rep, state senator, House rep, and senator. At least I get on an FBI list or the Main Core list or something, so I can be listed as an Enemy of the State!

46. In the interest of fairness and journalistic integrity...
...here is the reply I received:

The New England Chapter of NATAS honored Bill O'Reilly for his contribution to television, not Comcast or CN8. As far as Barry is concerned, we don't comment on the personnel matters of current or former employees and just because you have read something in the paper, doesn't make it accurate. We wish Barry well in his future endeavors.

O'Reilly is a fetid boil on the butt of Journalism, he cannot shine the shoes of those who have walked the road of integrity in Journalism. Pathetic, and the complaints of a "Liberal Media" go rarely challenged, sad state of affairs.

16. The Powers that Be fired Mary Mapes, and her boss Dan Rather
And then set up a kangaroo court to rule over whether these two did a fair job in their last Sixty Minute II story (The report about George W BUsh and his bad record with the Texas Air Guard.)

Not one, I'll repeat, not one, major newspaper in this country pointed out that the court that hung them was a kangaroo court. Dick Thornburgh had as much business judging the quality of Mapes' work as Benedict Arnold would have had judging George Washington. But M$M kept quiet.

However the people behind the Peabody award gave the duo a Peabody, journalism's highest honor, just months after Big Media punished them.

OUr media is only a tool of the military, the banking interests, and the oil and pharmaceutical/pesticide industries.

Seriously.

You can tell them facts, and they'll say "well my sources say otherwise"... and if you ask for their source, they'll just avoid telling you that their source is a) some blowhard RW talk show liar or b) their ass.

19. Where will all the real journalists be welcome? It's time to find a home for them.
MS NBC has made a good start. Do they want the mantel or are they afraid of being tagged as "left wing" journalism? Now would seem a good time to make a business decision to offer an intelligent alternative to FOX and CNN which would be unashamedly "liberal." (Liberal - from Latin liberalis - suitable for a freeman)

28. Still think we have and open and free media?
We live in a country that awards frauds, emulates cowards, enriches thieves and punishes anyone who points that out.

This country is like a Hollywood movie set. Look behind and all there is are a few sticks holding up the whole phony show and if anyone points that out they're ridiculed, silenced or worse.

America is about to take the biggest fall since Roman Expire, only much, much worse. Nothing built of deceit lasts and this country is full of the most deceitful people the world has ever known.

and Blowhard used to host Inside Edition, so that's certainly at play here. I don't think I would have went beyond mocking him everywhere I went, as to me O'Blowme isn't worth it. You stick your neck out for the big things, like lying to go to war and knowing they're lying and calling them on it - things that matter - BILLO doesn't matter.

33. I'm thinking of posting this reply in the comments section.
It may not do any good, but I'm so damned sick of these ignorant fucks that I just want to get off a few shots.

Man, it's weird that so many people still fall for conservative talking points like O'Reilly's, especially after eight years of being screwed by the administration he's propping up. Sadly, embracing emotionalism and prejudice over rational thought and compassion is a common human failing. Throughout history, those in power have kept commoners under control by using bigotry to distract them from the true causes of their problems. From Russian pogroms to medieval witch hunts to the Inquisition, members of the ruling class have always been able to control the groundlings by creating scapegoats. The manufactured outrage generated by the conservative wind machines such as O'Reilly is just the latest example of an age-old political technique. The majority of the comments here pretty much prove it.

What do you think?
