S.D. (South Dakota) GOP head says Democrat(sic) interest is a 'flash in the pan'

Recent growth in the state Democratic Party isn’t likely to cause a shift in power in future state elections, according to the state GOP chairman, who said Republican Party members “welcome the competition” and that the recent interest in Democratic goings-on is “a mile wide and an inch deep.”

As of May 16, there were 192,037 Democrats in the state, up more than 4,000 in a six-week span dating to April 1. Meanwhile, Republican numbers rose by 322 over that period, according to statistics from the secretary of state’s office. The Republican Party still holds a decided numerical advantage over the Democrats, with 235,965 members as of May 16.

State Republican Chairman Karl Adam, of Pierre, said he’s not overly concerned with the Democrats’ growth, since South Dakota still is a GOP state and the party remains “at the top of the pile.”

“We maintain a majority in the (state) House and Senate. We need to step up to the plate and be the party of leadership and the party of majority again in 2008,” Adam said. “This will give us a great opportunity and it will give us great impetus to get out and campaign hard.”

But, Adam warned, “we can’t rest on our past.”

6. South Dakota (other than Rapid City area) has great progressive potential.
The southwest of the state is overrun with backward hicks, but the rest of the state is pretty progressive at heart.

7. Oh, man, I live in the eastern part of the state.
We were counting on Rapid City to be the progressive part.

Here, we have hand-lettered anti-abortion billboards dotting the corn fields. And warnings to animal rights activists to stay away.

8. Southeast is most progressive.
The whole state is pretty anti-abortion, but for "better" reasons on average than found in, say, the southern states. There are those anti-abortion signs in Rapid too.
