Bush scales back McCain events (at campaign's request)
Source: Politico

President Bush is scaling back next week’s fundraising swings for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) at the request of the campaign, which wants the events closed to the press, POLITICO has learned.

The change — in both Arizona and Utah — is part of McCain’s delicate effort to find the balance between embracing an unpopular president and taking advantage of his huge continuing draw with well-heeled Republicans.

The Arizona event, which was to be at the Phoenix Convention Center, was the first time Bush was to have appeared with McCain since their White House meeting in March.

2. Great shades of Al Gore.
Mc Cain is trying to distance himself from Bush. Just like Gore tried to distance himself from Clinton. That didn't work out too well. Are we about to see the Republican version of 2000?

12. Welcome to DU! mcsame will have to do more than that to distance himself from
the reruns of those nice photos of him embracing bush and burying his face in bush's armpit on one 2004 campaign stop, and eating cake with king george at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego - on the very same day New Orleans was drowning.

Unlike many savvy DUers here, I don't know how to post pictures. But if you browse around here for any length of time, you're bound to find one - or a whole montage of them. mcsame is EPOXIED to bush. LAMINATED to bush. SURGICALLY ATTACHED to bush. BOLTED. GRAFTED ON. And if we're really smart and shrewd as Dems, that's where we will KEEP him until the end of election season.

7. Something sinister too
Those fundraisers are probably there to attract big money donors - donors who will give far in excess of the $2300 Mr.Campaign Finance Reform says should be the maximum. McCain and the RNC and some state GOP committees in swing states have a scam that allows donors to kick in up to $70,100 each. Bush/McCain fundraisers were just moved to locations far from the eyes of the press. A likely explanation is they don't want the press to find out who the fat cat donors with corrupt motives are. That would look bad for McCain.

Sen. John McCain, right, said President Bush has led the nation with "moral clarity" and "firm resolve."

Not that McCain was ever really good, he wasn't.

27. Poor ticket sales, secrecy top concerns
A Tuesday fundraiser headlined by President Bush for U.S. Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign is being moved out of the Phoenix Convention Center.

Sources familiar with the situation said the Bush-McCain event was not selling enough tickets to fill the Convention Center space, and that there were concerns about more anti-war protesters showing up outside the venue than attending the fundraiser inside.

Another source said there were concerns about the media covering the event.

Bush's Arizona fundraising effort for McCain is being moved to private residences in the Phoenix area. A White House official said the event was being moved because the McCain campaign prefers private fundraisers and it is Bush administration policy to have events in public venues open to the media. The White House official said to reconcile that the Tuesday event will be held at a private venue and not the Convention Center.

Convention Center personnel confirmed the event has been canceled at their venue.

Tickets to the event were to range from $1,000 to $25,000 for VIP treatment. Money was to go toward McCain's presidential bid and a number of Republican Party organs.

It should be noted that Republicans typically only have two "organs" -- the mouth and the asshole, and they're interchangeable.
