(Bob) Barr is Libertarian nominee; he vows 'strongest ticket' in party's history
Source: USA Today

Former Georgia congressman Bob Barr, who used to be a Republican, today won the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination. The Associated press reports it took six rounds of voting at the party's convention in Denver to settle on Barr, one of the lawmakers who led the impeachement proceedings against then-president Clinton.

In this statement issued by the party, Barr says "we emerge here with the strongest ticket in the history of the Libertarian Party."

Party spokesman Andrew Davis says in the statement that "we're proud to present to the American voters Bob Barr as our presidential nominee. While Republicans and Democrats will fight for their own power, Libertarians will fight for Americans. ... Republicans and Democrats have good reason to fear a candidate like Barr, who refuses to accept the 'business-as-usual' attitude of the current political establishment."

1. I think he's probably right.
If he were to tap someone like Gravel as veep. Two former establishment guys from both sides of the aisle.

The libertarian ticket this year could pull a halfway decent number. Most likely heavily from the former Republican base.

24. Actually the best a Libertarian did was 1980
Ed Clark ran very strong in several states, his best being Alaska where he got 12% of the total vote.

4. This could have some very interesting results
There's quite a few "Libertarian" leaning Republicans in Texas. There's also quite a few Republicans who do not like McCain one bit.

I'm interested in seeing how this goes over in my state and all the other Republican strongholds. :D

17. Jeez, he looks like a cheesy televangelist. Barr
would have been better off convincing Ron Paul to come on board. At any rate, he'll siphon off McCain votes, so it's all good.

wasn't he hinting at an endorsement? Lots of young voters who haven't cared until now. Would be great to get them thinking about democratic issues.

Face it, if Paul were running for the Libertarian nomination, he would crush Barr. He is their idol.

9. Doubtful, but it will be closer than usual. We may get 45% of the vote in some states in the South.
Edited on Sun May-25-08 08:43 PM by ryanmuegge
Which is a nice moral victory for us. I highly doubt we'll actually win any of them, but one never knows until the numbers are in.

This election is impossible to predict.

20. 45% may be enough to win a state or two.
Barr could siphon off enough votes in some Southern states, especially in Louisiana and Georgia to name two, that it might be 45%-44%-11% in our favor.

Can't take it for granted, but it makes the fight a bit easier.

10. Barr was a prick
during the Clinton impeachment, but, that little incident of Bubba not being able to keep his pants zipped, especially when he knew the pubs were out to get him,and then lies about it, makes me wonder if he gives a shit about the democratic party at all. He put his dick above the entire party and hurt us all, thousands of US dead and Iraqis and Afghanis, just for his own personal gratification. I believe Al Gore would have won in a landslide way to big to steal if Clinton hadn't damaged our party. I guess that doesn't have anything to do with Barr, but what would we expect our leaders to do if "W" was caught fellating Rove? Besides laughing half to death then what?

Any attempts to do something by more junior members would be taken off the table by you know who.

11. There's a chance he can peel away votes from our candidate as well.
Remember in 1992, everyone thought that Perot was only a threat to Bush and not Clinton? In the exit polls, we found out the opposite was true. This can be the same thing. I know Barr is against the Bush administration on a number of issues, especially constitutional ones. That, by itself, may get him some of our votes. Also, I don't know where he stands on the Iraq War, but it he's a real Libertarian, he's against it. And that can hurt us too. Don't just assume he'll only peel votes away from McCain.

12. Bob Barr is a two'fer for liberals
1) He is a strong 'conservative' candidate.
2) He supports the drug war (thus robs the 'independence' party of their best issue).

13. Barr should be good for 5-7% of the popular vote.
Not every disaffected Republican will be voting for McCain. Add Ron Paul for V.P. to that ticket and we could be talking double-digits. That would be trouble indeed for McCain and what's left of the GOP.

26. Here's the irony: The Libertarians helped cost Barr his House seat
Edited on Mon May-26-08 02:32 AM by Fighting Irish
The “worst Drug Warrior in Congress” has lost his seat -- and the Libertarian Party appears to have played a small role in making it happen.

U.S. Rep. Bob Barr, an outspoken opponent of medical marijuana, was defeated by Rep. John Linder in a Republican primary election in Georgia on August 20. With 82% of precincts reporting, Linder had 67% of the vote to Barr’s 33%, prompting Barr’s concession.

Over the past two weeks, Barr had been the target of a barrage of television ads produced by the Libertarian Party. The ads were run by Carole Ann Rand, the LP candidate for U.S. House in Georgia’s 7th Congressional district.

“Barr’s defeat is a victory for every American who believes that doctors and patients -- rather than politicians -- should be making medical decisions,” said Rand. “Like Babe Ruth pointing to a spot in the bleachers and hitting a home run, we pointed at our target and helped knock him out of Congress.”

http://cannabisnews.com/news/13/thread13831.shtml

After leaving Congress, Barr left the GOP and became a Libertarian.

And "Mr War On Drugs" later began lobbying on behalf of the Marijuana Policy Project.

39. Apparently not...
From Wikipedia's page on Barr:

"Regarding the drug war, I've been there, done that, and know firsthand our current strategy is not working. Continuing to have the federal government run roughshod over the states, even if the citizens of a state decide they wish to legalize medicinal marijuana, for example, is wrong."
