Dunkin' Donuts yanks Rachael Ray ad
Source: Boston Globe

Does Dunkin' Donuts really think its customers could mistake Rachael Ray for a terrorist sympathizer? The Canton-based company has abruptly canceled an ad in which the domestic diva wears a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men. Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin, were so incensed by the ad that there was even talk of a Dunkin' Donuts boycott. "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad," Malkin yowls in her syndicated column. "Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons." The company at first pooh-poohed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh. But the right-wing drumbeat on the blogosphere continued and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it'd be easier just to yank the ad. Said the suits in a statement: "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

30. I suppose not enough people were inhaling them
Krispy Kreme has had some financial problems recently. The company blames it on the Atkins craze, but I believe it is due to them expanding too fast. Three years ago there was one store here in Miami-Dade County. They opened two more, but those ones closed down after a year or tow and we are back to just one store.

We got a dozen chocolate glazed Krispy Kreme's (my favorite ... mmmmmmmm) and they had a weird taste to them. I was disappointed. I don't eat them that often, so I don't think the trans fat would have killed me. .....

Damn.

38. I think it depends on where you live. When I was in S.C., I was told very
fast that if I was to "belong" I must stop going to the Northern Dunkin Donuts and go to the Southern Krispy Kreme. We had one next to a night club.. it was always just so odd that the red "hot" sign was lit up, just as the club doors were closing. I think they made more money at 2 in the morning than they did all day.

3. Isn't Dunkin Donuts still a Carlyle Group company?
I'm not so effete that I'd turn down a gob of deep-fried, sugar-encrusted dough (especially when it's stuffed with Bavarian cream) to occasionally accompany my elitist latté, but it should be a simple matter to find an alternative that doesn't put money into the pockets of the fucking Carlyle Group.

Her cooking shows on Food Network are wonderful to watch for so many reasons. Her personality can cheer just about anyone up. A lot of her cooking is even *gasp* vegetarian! And even if it's not, it's usually low-fat and can be considered healthier than most.

In the picture, she looks like a really pretty lady in a fucking scarf.

75. Brains? Of course, almost everyone in Amerikkka has a brain...

It is obviously and demonstrably apparent that way too many of these brains are not evolved sufficiently, thereby operating very inefficiently.

Only the basic reptilian functions of these brains, the "flight or fight" ability is managing their reactions.

Rational thought, critical thinking and deductive reasoning are not "wired in" or even "above the horizon" for all of these folks.

Our brothers and sisters, the "sheeple", have been "dumbed down" by a system that requires masses of consumer and producer "ants".

Now! Get back in line for your Kool-Aid, and next years models.

these right wing people if I could even call them that, would be afraid of their own shadows, god how disgusting, worried about a scarf, I think it looks pretty nice, and I wear alot of scarves.

79. You know, I watched that show.
I don't recall her ever advising folks to stiff the table
staff as a way to save money. In fact, at least two meals
a day in that series seemed to come from places that didn't
*HAVE* table staff (such as markets and take-away places
and the like).

Perhaps you watched a different series than I did?

87. 10% used to be the norm, not long ago.
Then went to 15%, now 20%?

Who gets to decide what the standard is, and did they consult with the public?

88. I don't think there's any official "tip".
There isn't some agency that comes up with what an acceptable tip is. The public are the ones who determine what they think the service was worth.

10% is alright, it's something. But when you realize how hard servers work and if you got great service then maybe 20% is a better tip, right?

It comes down to how cheap you are. You go out to get served, you generally pay for that. If you think 10% is a great tip than fine, just keep in mind the next time you go to the place again, they're probably going to remember you. If you shorted your server, don't expect the kind of service the person who REALLY tips gets.

62. What the hell?!
Any knuckledragger that found an issue with that ad has ALOT more problems than political in my view. More like a vastly undeveloped brain that is 70 percent beer and 10 percent NASCAR.

Oh well Fuck Dunkin'Donuts! They are cowards in my view.

74. Jesus Effing Christ!
To my....untrained eye, it looks like she's wearing a.........scarf. Sorta trendy, fashionable at the moment type of thing. Something her stylist picked up at A&F or Hollister most likely. But Malkin must be right, Sound Transit has a billboard with a girl wearing one like it, so we now know that Sound Transit are terrorist sympathizers and showing solidarity for Palestinian murderers! Burn the busses!!!! Down with Sound Transit!!!!

Oh....wait. It's just a scarf. If they wanna give her shit for hawking crappy donuts, be my guest, but this has to be the most moronic thing I've ever heard out of a wingnut's mouth yet. Until O'Reilly gets into it, that is. Or that fat assclown Limbaugh, who obviously has no problem with the product being sold.

68. Dammit! How can Malkin get away with this crap? If anyone knows
of a petition protesting Dunkin Donuts for caving to the right wing looney tunes (not to mention insulting Arabs), please post it. I'm going to write a letter but a group thing would be much more effective. Normal people outnumber the Malkin freaks and companies need to realize that pissing off the masses to cater to the few will hurt them where it counts.

If they're going to crater to a shrill, nasty, fascist geisha girl like Malkin, they can damned well do without my business.

Krispy Kremes are better, anyway.....

80. Malkin nutjobs are also after....
Paula Dean! I read a wacked out rw message board (lucianne.com) and they are in full alert about that terrorist Rachel Ray. Many who posted admitted they didn't know who she was, but were glad she has been 'exposed' and they will now buy DD coffee. One thinks she even had Obama on her show! I doubt that, but why should they worry about the truth when posting.

They are also after Paula Dean- on pg. 43 of one of her cookbooks she praised Jimmy Carter (Paula is from GA after all). So they will boycott her also. Also a problem now with Urban Outfitters and their Islamofascist clothing.
