Wasserman Schultz: Judiciary Committee Willing To Arrest Rove If He Doesn't Testify
Source: BGTH

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said that the House Judiciary Committee would be willing to arrest Karl Rove if the former White House official doesn't testify about his role in the firing of nine U.S. attorneys in 2006.

Wasserman Schultz, in an interview on MSNBC Tuesday, echoed the demand of House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) that Rove would not be allowed to invoke executive privilege to avoid testifying. Rove could not invoke the privilege since he said he did not have conversations with the president about the attorneys' firing, Wasserman Schultz said.

Asked by MSNBC host Dan Abrams if the committee would go far as having Rove arrested, Wasserman said it would.

"Well, if that's what it takes," she said. "I mean we really cannot allow the co-equal branch of government, the legislative branch, to be trampled upon by the executive branch. The founding fathers established three branches of government. We are a co-equal branch, and this is an administration that essentially has ignored and disrespected the role of the legislative branch for far too long."

great she's finally trying to do something.. I'm pointing out her DLC ties and her loaylties.. If you follow this woman, you'll also notice, she doesn't want to take on 3 or her republican friends for Democrats because they are friends.. and she's on the florida democratic nominating committee.. DLC needs to take a hike.

that pisses me off about her.. and also, that friz mop hair of hers is annoying and her mouth looks like it is going to snap and take a bite (I know extremely petty, but she is just as petty).

I am wondering why so many of the women representatives have such odd style... Perhaps it makes them stand out for a reminder at the polls?

27. There is a difference this time.
The issue here is Rove's alleged involvement and possible tampering with the prosecution of a Democrat in Alabama. Rove's alleged involvement arose out of his work for Republican politicians in Alabama, not for his work for the White House.

Unless Rove wants the to assert that President Bush or the White House or some issue within the presidential purview was at stake, he will have a hard time succeeding with his claim that this issue is subject to executive privilege. This is especially true if he stated in public that he did not talk about this matter with President Bush.

Although Rove's alleged statement that he did not discuss this matter with Bush was not made under oath, I believe that, should he challenge Congress's placing him in inherent contempt in a court, the evidence that he made that statement would be admissible against him should he assert executive privilege and that the statement would be considered, at the least, to impeach any testimony he might make to the contrary.

Caveat! I don't know all the facts, and my research on executive privilege is superficial (reading some secondary materials), and I could be quite wrong. I am making a somewhat educated guess.

Rove's statements on television might even be used against him in even more effective ways that I don't want to discuss here. Congress may believe that there is little risk in placing Rove in inherent contempt on this issue. This may be the showdown issue they have been waiting for, an issue on which their chances of prevailing are very high in just about any court in the U.S. Therefore, they may be more willing to place him in contempt and take action against him on this issue than on other issues.

16. You mean Abrams NOW pursuing the question............
.......this wouldn't have happened on MSNBC 2 or 3 yrs ago. Remember when they fired Donahue, and were trying to outfox Fox? Now with the prevailing winds changing (back to somewhat liberal) MSNBC has decided to go a wee bit more left at this time and pin their fortunes on that at least for a while. Hell, even look at "Tweety", you'd think he still worked for Nader.

13. And who is going to arrest him?
Who is going to arrest him? The White House is probably shaking in its boots. Laughing their heads off. And already on the phone with their Justice Department. Which is probably also laughing their heads off.

"I mean we really cannot allow the co-equal branch of government, the legislative branch, to be trampled upon by the executive branch."

It has already been trampled on. Crushed to death as a matter of fact.

Rove is a true swine, and he knows no depth to honesty. He will evade Congress as long as possible, and then once there, he will evoke the 5th Amendment over and over and over again.

Such a slime ball...one the right wingers can truly look to as their hero.

23. you can watch the clip on DU video, she was hardly the champion of justice
when asked if Karl Rove would be arrested, she (and all democrats) should says forcefully and with pride, "YES!, If Karl Rove breaks the law by ignoring a congressional subpoena, we will have no choice but to uphold our oaths and direct the Sergent at Arms of the United States Congress to take Karl Rove into custody, and impel him to testify as required by law."

she was very coy and apologetic... unacceptable

Wasserman-Schultz used to be one of my favorite members... after her performance on FL DNC delegate issue and this performance here I am very disappointed

sorry to seem so harsh when she said so much right, but I literally yelled when she did not answer is question directly... no more niceties to these criminals

24. I believe this thread is more about Debbie W-S than Rove. My first
thought was a nasty one - that she is trying to be the heroine again with Democrats. Her sense of justice hasn't been so great on the Primaries issue. I have to thank her for the clarity of the statement about being co-equal - but the organization she represents, has been preempting the DNC and mainstrem Democrats, especially Progressive ones, for too long. I would like to say that everything that has gone wrong for Democrats has been because because of the DLC and she is as entrenched in it as McAulliffe and the Clintons. I'll wait and see if she has staying power on Rove. She became a 'non-hero' with me.

30. Debbie Wasserman Schultz who is protecting GOP congressmen in Florida??
Hard to trust Wasserman Schultz on anything considering her active protection of republican congressmen in Florida!

Another Dem AWOL in Fla.

By Markos Moulitsas
Posted: 03/25/08 05:06 PM

...Today, yet another Florida Democrat should be in the doghouse, as Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is following suit, publicly and enthusiastically kissing Republican behind. “I can’t say enough good things about Ileana Ros-Lehtinen; she has been my friend since I was first elected to office,” Wasserman Schultz gushed to the Miami Herald earlier this month.

Wasserman Schultz’s disloyalty is particularly jarring since she is co-chairwoman of the DCCC’s Red to Blue program, tasked with wrestling Republican seats into the Democratic column, while Ros-Lehtinen represents one of the three South Florida Republican House seats Democrats are seriously contesting for for the first time in decades. Given Emanuel’s stinging rebuke to Hastings in 2006, Wasserman Schultz should be relieved Emanuel is no longer chairman of the DCCC. Inexplicably, current Chairman Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.) appears willing to giving her a pass.

At blame are tired Cuba politics. Wasserman Schultz has received strong support from right-wing organizations and individuals with interests in promoting a hard line against Cuba’s communist regime, from the U.S.-Cuba Democracy Political Action Committee to sugar agricultural interests. Last year, Wasserman Schultz made her right-wing donors and her Republican friends happy by quashing a Democratic attempt to ease draconian family travel, remittance and trade restrictions to Cuba in the House.

This is bad politics on the most basic level — the first rule of Latino politics is that you never come between them and their families.

In fact, it is exactly that family travel ban that has made those three South Florida House seats held by Republican Cuban-Americans suddenly competitive....

...About the brightest spot for those endangered Republicans is their ally inside the DCCC. Thanks to Wasserman Schultz’s “recusal,” her continued praise of GOP candidates in the media will continue to prop up these incumbents and their unpopular Cuba policies, as well as the broader failed Republican agenda....

38. her job is to get DEMS elected, not protect Hard Core Right Wing Republicans
She is co-chairwoman of the DCCC’s Red to Blue and as such is supposed to help
get more democrats elected into congress. Instead she has been blocking Demns in
her state and protecting the pro war right wing republicans.

If you are a republican, then this is a good thing.
