Deseret NewsA few hundred people started to gather shortly after 5 p.m. at the Salt Lake City-County Building to join former Mayor Rocky Anderson in a peace and human rights rally.
The rally is organized in response to the visit by President George W. Bush, who is in Utah today and tomorrow. He is attending two fundraisers for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain, held at a home in the Avenues and at Mitt Romney's Deer Valley vacation home.
He will leave Thursday morning after meeting with the LDS Church's First Presidency.
Unlike those willing to spend up to $70,100 to meet Bush, the attendees at the rally in Salt Lake are strongly opposed to the president, especially the War in Iraq. A sampling of signs demonstrated that opposition, with such phrases as "Indict Bush," "End Needless War" and "War is Not the Answer."
"It's a crime," said Chanse Frenetge, a student at the University of Utah. "We should have never gone to war to begin with."
