EU calls on US to give up internet oversight
Source: CBC

A senior European Union official called on U.S. President Barack Obama to give up United States oversight of the internet.

Major decisions on how the internet is run are made solely by the California-based non-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN.

It is overseen by the U.S. Commerce Department under an agreement that expires Sept. 30.

EU Commissioner Viviane Reding, the EU's internet chief, called for the severing of links between ICANN and the U.S. government.

2. Ummm, no.
Thanks anyway.

If they want to manage the internet they should invent their own and have at it.

3. IMHO, We need an international body to oversee the Internet
The internet is not going away, nor is it in our best interest to restructure it as a domestic entity with virtual "tariffs" etc... Now that we have an Administration capable of preserving our interests AND promoting international cooperation, it's time to create an international body to manage the internet. What's more, if the new oversight body is founded on the inviolable principle that internet access is a right rather than a privilege, we can cut off current efforts to create access/price tiers that will privilege those who can pay for the highest speeds etc...

4. ICANN is International
ICANN is an international organization to keep consistent internet access and rules together. They never even met in the USA, their next stops are Australia and Africa.

EU wants to run it, instead of it being a Global organization. The United States does not run it. It is misleading..

5. Thanks for the clarification....but it doesn't sound like ICANN is sufficient
I'm not an expert on ICANN but their own website states that

ICANN's role is very limited, and it is not responsible for many issues associated with the Internet, such as financial transactions, Internet content control, spam (unsolicited commercial email), Internet gambling, or data protection and privacy.

Perhaps what we need is a much stronger international oversight body? Otherwise, the Internet will be Balkanized to the detriment of all.

6. So, the question becomes ...
Which of those do you want an international body responsible for?

Gambling and data protection? Spam? Financial transactions or Internet content?

Keep in mind, that would include China, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Russia, as well as France and Italy. If it's composed proportionally, it means a majority won't be democracies and most won't have free speech laws that are enforced 'at home'.

8. I wouldn't mind it being a little more Balkanized
Of course saying so will set off all the firespitting jingoists around here, not that I give a shit about what they "think," but having the thing operate at the pleasure of one country's leadership at this point is more than a little insane. The broader the variety of people with a say in how it operates, the less likely that one person is going to have the authority to implement, say, content controls, much like the United States tries every couple of years despite repeated hints from the Supreme Court.

7. Thanks, but no thanks EU
Feel free to invent your own world-changing communication medium and hand control over to the UN, but I think we'll keep control over the one that we invented.
