Democrats Leave Gitmo Closing Money Out Of Bill
Source: Associated Press

(05-04) 14:09 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Amid fears that terror suspects could be brought to the U.S., House Democrats on Monday rebuffed the Obama administration's request for $50 million to relocate prisoners from the detention facility at Guantanamo, Cuba.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, D-Wis., dropped the request from a $94.2 billion measure funding military and diplomatic efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan through the fall.

At the same time, Obey served notice that President Barack Obama's move to boost troop levels and increase the tempo of military operations in Afghanistan had better show results or else he would rethink his support of the effort.

The bill, which was released to key lawmakers Monday, registers about $9 billion more than Obama's $84.9 billion request, reflecting additional money for procurement of cargo planes, armored combat vehicles, helicopters and other items. About $3 billion was added above Obama's $7 billion request for foreign aid accounts, including security aid to Israel, funding to help Mexico fight drug cartels, and $100 million to fight AIDS and other diseases in places like Haiti and the Congo.

Obey also boosted the administration's $1.5 billion request to fight the flu to $2 billion.

17. Relocation is more than just getting them here

There's the cost of housing them, feeding them, legal representation, prosecution costs, etc.

6. The latest figures I found have the number of
prisoners at 277. How in the world could it cost $50 million to move 277 prisoners?

9. It's not the MOVING that's the problem
You could put all 277 of these people on three C-130s and fly them anywhere for far less than $50 million. They're worried about the fact that once they start looking into this shit, at least half those people are going to turn out to be asshole neighbors.

Let me explain: You're an Afghani man whose next-door neighbor is an asshole. He likes nothing more than to upset the tranquility of the neighborhood. Allah be praised but you hate that man. So...when the US forces started offering rewards for the names of terrorists, you were first in line. "Hamid, who lives right next to me, is a terrorist. Please take him away." In reality, Hamid's NOT a terrorist, but try telling that to the US forces.

Unfortunately for Hamid, he's now been waterboarded so many times he thinks he's Osama bin Laden.

Anyway, once we investigate everyone in Gitmo we're going to find a lot of Hamids, and we'll have to pay reparations to them all.

14. Be a lot cheaper and fairer than the huge bonuses the AIG assholes got.
And even if these folks are terrorists (and I don't believe it for a moment), they've still done less damage than the huge funds and banks have done to the country.

No, not being sarcastic.

12. There is the $100 Million Bush Library at SMU
The terrorists can be re-trained as librarians and there would be money to spare.

15. How many of these 'Not in My Backyard' congress members
have a maximum security prison in their district? Getting funding for that?

I have a sex offenders detention center not far from where I live. I don't like the men housed there but its not like they're out mingling with the public.
