Pakistan commandos dropped into Taliban stronghold
By NAHAL TOOSI, Associated Press Writer -1 hr 40 mins ago

MARDAN, Pakistan – Helicopters dropped Pakistani commandos into a Taliban stronghold in the Swat Valley on Tuesday, pressing ahead with an offensive the army said had killed more than 750 militants and driven around 800,000 people from their homes.

Despite claims of success in an operation that began after heavy U.S. pressure, the army said it had yet to start operations in the region's main town of Swat, where witnesses say Taliban insurgents are in control and preparing for what could be bloody door-to-door fighting.

Farther south, a suspected U.S. missile attack flattened a house and killed at least eight people in another militant bastion near the Afghan border, officials said, in the latest in a series of attacks that have strained U.S. and Pakistani ties.

Choppers placed troops on "search and destroy" missions in the remote Piochar area in the upper reaches of the Swat Valley, army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said. Officials have identified Piochar as the rear-base of an estimated 4,000 Taliban militants. It is seen as a possible hiding place of Swat Taliban chief Maulana Fazlullah.

3. I'm asking
because I'm wondering if the military will be able to discern between the taliban and the civilians. I do believe they are seriously going after the taliban after years of lip service but will only keep the good will of the civilian population if casualties are kept to a bare minimum.

5. Not likely; Where do you think the Taliban come from?
Edited on Tue May-12-09 06:14 PM by Chulanowa
That's the big hurdle with wars like this, where your enemy isn't a regimented military separate from the civilian population, but instead a popular front made up of that civilian population.

There's no way to filter it so that you ONLY get Taliban fighters. When the foreign troops come to town, everyone will be a "Taliban fighter"

6. BBC: Eyewitness: Trapped in Mingora
Eyewitness: Trapped in Mingora

Fighting in the Swat valley between the Pakistani army and Taleban militants has almost completely destroyed the communications network and links with the rest of the country.

Tens of thousands of people have fled the area, but there are some who have not managed to escape.

The BBC's Urdu Service has been able to get in contact with one such person, who described the situation in the city of Mingora.

He agreed to speak on condition of anonymity.

The Taleban are still patrolling Mingora, and from where I am based, I can only see the army troops at the emerald mines.

The sound of firing can be heard intermittently in various areas of Mingora.

US House approves $2.3 bn for Pakistan
Saturday, May 16, 2009
WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives has approved a $96.7 billion supplemental measure to fund Iraq and Afghanistan wars, with $2.3 billion flowing into Pakistan as economic and security assistance as well as financing for enhanced American diplomatic missions in the key anti-terror allied country.

According to the House Appropriations Committee, the $2.3 billion for Pakistan include about $1 billion for the socio-economic development, $400 million for strengthening counterinsurgency capability of Pakistani forces and some other expenditure like US diplomatic operations, diplomatic security and a new secure embassy and consulates in the country.

The economic assistance for Pakistan will be $997 “more than the Obama administration had requested and help address the economic crisis, including agriculture and food security, assist the displaced population, strengthen national and provincial governance, expand the rule of law, and to improve access and quality of education.”On the military side, $400 million have been allocated for the Pakistan Counterinsurgency Capability Fund (PCCF) to help train and equip the Pakistani security forces for counterinsurgency operations. The funds for the PCCF would be available on September 30, 2009.

Noting the importance of the region to American security, the bill affirms support for the democratic Pakistani government, saying “the United States and the international community have welcomed and supported Pakistan’s return to the civilian rule after almost nine years with the free and fair elections of February 18, 2008.”

The congressional findings cited in the bill say that “Afghanistan and Pakistan are experiencing a deterioration of their internal security resulting from a growing insurgency fueled by Al-Qaeda, the Taliban and other extremist networks that continue to operate along the western border of Pakistan, including in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.”

The bill urges that “the governments of both Afghanistan and Pakistan must expand the writ of the national government across all provinces to secure their borders, protect their population, enforce the rule of law, and tackle the pervasive problem of corruption in order to bring security and stability to their people.”

Car bomb blast kills 11 in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A car bomb ripped through a packed street in Peshawar and killed 11 people, including women and children, near an ice cream shop and Internet cafe Saturday, officials said.

The blast exploded in the densely populated Kashkal area of Peshawar.

‘We were sitting in our showroom when there was a huge blast took place,’ Mohammad Anis, the owner of a nearby car showroom, told AFP.

‘When I came out, I saw fire and smoke everywhere around me. The first thing that I saw was this,’ he added holding out a bloodied severed hand that had been ripped from an arm by the force of the explosion.

Gunshots were fired shortly after the bomb exploded and Anis said private security guards who had been sitting in his showroom, accompanying their bosses, ran outside and

opened fire into the air

in the wake of the blast.

11. The Taleban are bad, and are in cahoots with Al-Qaeda
A Taleban victory in Pakistan will threaten India, which has already been under attack by the same sort of Islamic radicals that made up the Taleban.

We wouldn't be in this mess had Bush finished the job at Tora Bora, instead of letting bin Laden escape. Had bin Laden been captured or killed at Tora Bora, the war would have been over, the Taleban would have been defeated, and Bush would not have the excuse to invade Iraq.

12. Pakistan Bomb Hits Handicapped Kids' Bus ( stopped to get ice cream ? )
Taliban reiterated; " There are no civilians in jihad"
Violence is engulfing Pakistani territory along the Afghan border as American and allied forces crank up the pressure on al Qaeda and Taliban militants entrenched in the forbidding and barely governed mountains and valleys.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but an intelligence official in Islamabad told CBS News' Farhan Bokhari immediate investigations were probing links to the militant Taliban movement in the Waziristan region along the border with Afghanistan.

Led by notorious warlord Baitullah Mehsud, the movement has been previously investigated for links to past attacks, including last September’s attack on Islamabad’s Mariott hotel.

Separately, a senior interior ministry official confirmed that following the attack a high alert was ordered for Lahore, capital of the populous Punjab province; Karachi, capital of the Sindh province; and Quetta, capital of the south western Baluchistan province.

“The security assessment right now sees the worst case scenario as that of attacks on the capitals of the three other provinces after Peshawar,” said the official, who also spoke with CBS News on condition of anonymity.
