Raleigh News and ObserverRALEIGH -- The chairman of Shaw University's Board of Trustees will hold a press conference today on the "future of the university" at 11 a.m.
According a two-sentence news release, Chairman Willie E. Gary, an attorney in Stuart, Fla., will "address faculty, staff, stakeholders and community concerning the future of Shaw University," one of the oldest historically black colleges in the south.

It's small news now, but I'm thinking of comments by Kuntsler and others about how the lower tier universities are going to start to fold under the weight of the economic "transition." I wonder how many will be HBCU's, like Shaw University. I never thought much of Shaw anyway, and I'd argue that a good 5% of universities and colleges over the US don't deserve the name and probably ought to be shuttered. But there are some fine HBCUs, public and private--including NC A&T in this state--and I sure hope they don't go under disproportionately.
