Anti-Obama protesters arrested in Bangalore
Source: Times of India

13 May 2009, 1928 hrs IST, PTI

BANGALORE: Some members of 'Anti-American Imperialism Forum', protesting against US President Barack Obama's "Bangalore to Buffalo" remark were arrested when they tried to forcibly enter Bank Of America, on M G road here on Wednesday.

About 25 protestors of the city-based outfit, carrying placards and shouting slogans - "Down, Down Big Brother Obama", "Buffalo has buffaloes, Bangalore has brains" "Osama terrorised innocent, Obama terrorises BPO workers" - were arrested when they tried to forcibly enter Bank Of America, deputy commissioner of Police (Central Division), G Ramesh said.

The agitators took out a protest march from Mahatma Gandhi statue to the Bank of America premises.

However they were later released. Obama recently said "say no to Bangalore and yes to Buffalo in New York", announcing end to years of tax incentives to those US companies which create jobs overseas in places like Bangalore. Instead, the incentives would now go to those companies which create jobs inside US, in places like the Buffalo city.

Umm....Last I checked, Obama was the President of the U.S. and not of India. Apparently, India feels that Obama should hold their best interests at heart rather than those of the American people.

When Indians do it, they're just protecting thier national interests, the poor dears.

8. just like we scream when the Saudis make our gas prices go up to $4.00 per gallon
then we scream about how their government sucks, how their culture treat women, how anti democratic they are but when the price of gas go low, we just keep quite.

13. Bullshit
I'm a feminist so I'm always screaming about the way women are treated in Saudi Arabia. I donate to an organization every month that helps feminists in Saudi Arabia. Maybe you only notice when it's convenient but don't project that on me.

And the $4 a gallon gas was due mostly due to energy speculation. But hey, whatever you need to come up with to justify India's double standard. Did you know that they are blocking imports from China right now? To protect their own industries.

34. I think that Vietnam is volunteering for the honor
As I understand it, they are (rather smartly actually) looking for manufacturing in high growth products, like motor scooters. I'm also given to believe that they intend to avoid being known for "cheap crap" like Chinese (mainland) scooters. If Vietnam is wooing Yamaha, Vespa, and Kymco then they would appear to be following the South Korean model. I wish them luck, it's been a long haul for the people, even if one disagrees with the politics.

35. They could design their own products and put them on the market
why would they need to have the honor of hosting foreign corporations? may be Vietnam is not setting the rules in the global economy that's why.

38. They could, but the lag time is long and expensive
I don't know when I first noticed Kia cars, but Kia has been making cars since 1948 or something like that. Huge investment and they also built cars for major brands before marketing their own abroad.

America has been burned by cheap Chinese scooters. They aren't cheap if they don't last, or worse- actually hurt people (faulty valve stems). Vietnam isn't China, but you can buy a Yamaha or Kymco with confidence because the dealerships and parts distribution have been established, as well as the reputation for quality and warranty fulfillment.

China can build as good a product as anyone. But China will build to the price without regard for the consequences- so if you want a $900 scooter you can slap your decals on, they will give it to you.

BTW: I think it's been proven by now, if the US economy dies -- so does the entire world's as a result and I just don't see how that can change. What's your plan in the event the global economy goes kaput?

28. invade countries and grab land to expand our economy
and make every other country to consume only our products, reserve the right to manufacture product for us and prohibit them to engage in manufacturing :sarcasm:

Seriously
That's a good question, the US has become the center of the global economy because it's been dictating the direction of the global economy in its own terms.
The whole thing has to be restructure to meet certain criteria not based in a XIX century economic model but in a new model that would require every country to manage their health care, education, civil rights and production at the same level according to new realities like over population, climate change, depleting of none renewable natural resource etc. and decentralizing the economies take them away from the few to all.

3. Like anyone in a foreign nation that is pissed at the US
rather than change their own government, they get pissed at us. Yes we do really horrible things overseas, I'm the first to admit it, but in this case as in many others, where is their government? How come they aren't providing jobs?

It's easy for Indian officials to stand by idly while their citizens protest some other government. It takes the onus off of them.

screw them. more misplaced anger. You got your iPods and your MTV and you are pissed that we are want our jobs back? fuck you. Go whine to your government.

18. Interestingly, it's the same type of governmental strategy that led to the rise of al-Qaida
Beat your citizens, torture them in jails and prisons, prohibit criticism of the ruling elite, and encourage discussion that the United States is holding you back, that the real problem is the United States.

9. Ding ding ding!
And the people who sympathize with people in other countries who piss and moan about America and demand that we provide them with industries and jobs rather than doing for themselves only perpetuate racist, elitist, colonialist attitudes. Besides, I thought the reason we had to do all this outsourcing was that the people in places like India are soooooo much smarter than we are.

it would be a real challenge to keep our economy going with out doing horrible things overseas if we keep ongoing on the same path, otherwise we have to implement real changes in all aspect of our economy.

20. I think you mean Switzerland. Denmark and Sweden are not known as tax havens.
The reason they are successful and have high wage jobs is that they don't allow companies to undercut wages through outsourcing. Note that they have open markets - open to goods and workers - but they enforce strict laws that protect their workers. So they're not just socialists, they're **ZOMGZ!** protectionist too.

24. I noticed that, even before 9/11/2001.
As much as we give out foreign aid and other goodies, the fact some countries still hate us -- at what point do we find other ways to make them like us? Not extortion or blackmail; Chavez and the anti-NPT folks in India have shown that.

42. What foreign aid?
Edited on Thu May-14-09 02:56 AM by fujiyama
India and Venezuela can hardly be compared to each other and neither country is the recipient of much US aid.

Also, neither country is anti American unless all you are going by are a bunch of idiots on the streets in Bangalore and Chavez' rants. If you've ever actually seen a Pew poll of other countries perceptions of the US, India's is actually pretty high.

Also, you should understand why India does not intend to sign the NPT and all for good reason considering the countries it is surrounded by and the threats it faces.

32. The wording could have been much better. We can encourage growth in America without
dissing other countries. I take it it was supposed to be catchy and clever, but it wasn't much of that either.

"say no to Bangalore and yes to Buffalo in New York"

When Obama writes his own stuff, it's magic. Some of his writers have a tin ear now and again, though.
