Myanmar's Suu Kyi charged over U.S. intruder

YANGON (Reuters) – Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was charged on Thursday with breaching the terms of her house arrest and faces up to five years in jail for allowing an American man to stay at her lakeside home, her party said.

Activists denounced her trial, set to begin on Monday, as a ploy by the country's junta to keep Suu Kyi, 63, sidelined ahead of elections in 2010.

The Noble Peace laureate's National League for Democracy (NLD) won a huge victory in 1990 polls only to be denied power by the military, which has ruled the former Burma since 1962.

Suu Kyi, whose latest six-year detention is due to expire on May 27, will remain in Yangon's Insein Prison for a trial that has been scheduled for May 18, a spokesman for the National League for Democracy (NLD) said.

1. The question is: How did this guy get past the guards in the first place?
My theory is: They saw this whacko swimming over the lake. What shall we do? Stop him? No. Once he has made it inside, she has violated the law.

I think, the saying "useful idiot" applies here.

2. This Yattaw guy is an idiot
The Junta can keep him...we don't want a moron like him back.
Granted: the junta would have found some other reason to keep Suu Kyi under detention but this yahoo didn't have to make things that much easier. And he's supposed to be a psychology student? Maybe he needs to start taking his meds.
Anyway, the generals are all getting older and the sooner they start dying out the better. The people in Myanmar deserve so much better.
