Mexican Data Say Migration to U.S. Has Plummeted
Source: NY Times

Census data from the Mexican government indicate an extraordinary decline in the number of Mexican immigrants going to the United States.

The recently released data show that about 226,000 fewer people emigrated from Mexico to other countries during the year that ended in August 2008 than during the previous year, a decline of 25 percent. All but a very small fraction of emigration, both legal and illegal, from Mexico is to the United States.

Because of surging immigration, the Mexican-born population in the United States has grown steeply year after year since the early 1990s, dipping briefly only after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, census data in both countries show.

Mexican and American researchers say that the current decline, which has also been manifested in a decrease in arrests along the border, is largely a result of Mexicans’ deciding to delay illegal crossings because of the lack of jobs in the ailing American economy.

1. In a Year, As Europe Comes Out of Depression, while US is Mired By Bad Policies
you'll see a tremendous outflow of American expats going to Europe for jobs, Geneva conventions and universal health care. The Europeans are not trashing their economies like the US is.

Besides, it's becoming evident the current administration has no interest in any of these issues.

2. The Europeans are trashing their economies, but it's still better than the US
My UK visa is up in just over a year and I'm dreading having to go back to the US. I would do almost anything to stay here. Even though the economy is complete shit, my prospects would still be better here than back in the US - unemployment and living with my parents in my 30's? No thanks. However, because visas are incredibly hard to get, and the EU economy is in bad shape, I don't think many people will be able to leave for it.

3. hell, I could tell that - saw the first water bottles and backbacks in months the other day
fences are staying up, border patrol seems desperate - flying helicopters and vehicles cruising all over the place, all the time. They must be worrying about layoffs. Migration is WAY down.

4. We're still talking
numbers on the order of magnitude of a million per year.

Now try to figure out how we are going to create an additional half million plus jobs every year for these people.
