Ron Paul's Son Announces Candidacy for Senate
Source: politics daily

Dr. Rand Paul, son of 2008 Republican Presidential candidate and fundraising juggernaut Ron Paul, announced his candidacy for US Senator from Kentucky in 2010. He teased the announcement on his Twitter feed, but let the cat out of the bag on the Rachel Maddow Show:

s a candidate, Paul's stands on the issues position him as a sort of "Ron Paul Lite." As enumerated on his website, he mixes more traditionally Republican ideas with Libertarian buzzwords. Like his dad, Rand Paul opposes the Iraq War, dings the Federal Reserve, and pushes back against the department of Education.

Still, the emphasis is more on traditional red meat issues like guns and tax cuts, which might help him enjoy broader support than his dad. If his father's supporters show even a little bit of loyalty to Rand Paul, I pity the fool that runs against him. Ron Paul has an intensely loyal, well-organized, and generous following.

1. "Rand" Paul?
Please tell me that he didn't name him after a certain overrated Russian author who wrote books about the libertarian nobility of selfishness and then proceeded to die bitter and alone?

I spent too much time dithering about my wording. I can, however, add this to your comments: :eyes:

14. I think the chances of being Randolf or Randall are higher but I suppose a possibility.

Although, the British WOULD get a kick out of the nickname "Randy".

17. You bet we would...
Prince Andrew in his younger days was sometimes known as 'Randy Andy', and it didn't mean that one of his royal names was Randolph!

Why is that? Because he's Ron Paul's son?

Is this Libertarian Aristocracy....or something?

7. I bet his issue specifics
become quite secondary when he is in the senate and then Caucuses and votes with the Republicans.

10. I find it fascinating that he announced on the Rachel Maddow Show.
He's running as a Republican. But he must believe he will have significant support on the left.

Or maybe it's because traditional right-leaning news outlets are so hostile to any Republicans that don't march in lockstep that he thought he would not get a fair hearing.

Either way, it's fascinating. Says a lot about Rand Paul and about the GOP, IMHO.

16. While I certainly don't want him in the White House, one thing..
I respected about Ron Paul is how he shook up the GOP. Just like Kucinich shakes up the Democrats. Ron Paul-lite Rand Paul might as well just be another Repuke to my eyes.
