Gilani for incorporating political dimensions following military operation

"ISLAMABAD, May 15 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Friday called for incorporating political dimensions, following the military operation in Swat and some other parts of Malakand to eliminate the militants and terrorists, in order to bring lasting peace to the area. Prime Minister Gilani in his opening remarks at an in‑camera briefing by the chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani to the parliamentarians said the government resorted to the operation as it was left with no other option.

"Prime Minister Gilani said the armed forces were called to take stern action against the miscreants and were carrying on the operation with full commitment and high degree of professionalism.

"The Prime Minister said army operation was not a permanent solution to the problem. He said political dimensions need to be incorporated for guaranteeing lasting peace in these disturbed areas.

"As the government firmly believes that Parliament is sovereign body, therefore taking of Parliamentary leadership on board is very essential. I assure you that the input of the today’s meeting along with the suggestions and observations from the forthcoming APC will be incorporated in our national security policy to deal with the situation," the Prime Minister said.

This is outstanding news. Pakistan has united politically to address the problems in Swat and the
western/northwestern provinces/etc. The P.M. has gained respect with his handing of the situation.

The drill in the past has been to focus entirely on on the East, the Indian border, and make sure that
there was no major conflict on the West, Afgan-Pakistan border. That meant an awkward detente with the
Taliban, who they created along with the U.S. in the 1980's.

Now the government sees what lunatics the Taliban are (or "miscreants" as they're called in the article).

The mention of "political dimension" means that there will a serious protection force for the people
from Taliban slaughter.
