Investigation into how Briton got pregnant in Laos jail
Source: The Telegraph

Miss Orobator was arrested 9 months ago as she tried to board a flight out of the country, allegedly in possession of 680 grammes (1.4lb) of heroin. She was held in squalid conditions without any consular or legal representation for much of the time.

Earlier this week Miss Orobator's mother, Jane Orobator, was able to meet her daughter for the first time since her arrest last August. "She told me she was not raped or sexually assaulted in prison and the father of her unborn child is not a Lao prison official," she said. "I hope that Samantha can now quickly have a fair trial and that she will be able to come home before too long," added Mrs Ororator.

However, the authorities now say the trial will not take place until they discover who the father is.

"The Lao authorities are concerned, they do not want to be blamed," said government spokesman Khenthong Nuanthasing.

The communist regime of the sleepy south east Asian country of 6 million people, sandwiched between Thailand, Vietnam and China, was caught off-guard by the outcry in Britain over its handling of the case.

4. laid back.
Laos has never been a hotbed of excitement.

Even as their Viet Cong and Khmer Rouge compatriots were fighting vicious wars next door, the Pathet Lao were sort of just 'there'.

6. I don't find anything funny about this story.
And I don't think anyone is trying to make the claim that this is a supernatural conception.

5. This happens in prison.
She was either raped by a guard or was trading sex for better treatment. (Which I guess, is quasi-rape.)

8. In this case, the better treatment is "not executed",
a form a punishment prohibited for pregnant women in Laos and a fate she would have almost certainly have faced otherwise. IIRC, she was already pregnant when she entered prison and is believed to have lost the baby while there, only to become pregnant again.

9.  Pregnant Briton sentenced to life
A pregnant British woman accused of smuggling heroin has been found guilty in Laos and sentenced to life in jail.

Samantha Orobator, 20, from south London, was caught with 1.5lb (680g) of the drug at Wattay airport in the capital, Vientiane, last August.

Her trial had been delayed while Laotian officials tried to find out how she became pregnant in prison.

She would have faced a mandatory death sentence, but the execution of pregnant prisoners is not allowed in Laos.

The UK has recently signed a prisoner transfer agreement with Laos, which means Ms Orobator could serve any potential sentence in a British jail.

If she was transferred to a British jail, I presume she'd be eligible for parole under British rules.
