31. That vigil may turn out a little rowdier than anyone would have expected, unfortunately.
Wichita has been a hotbed of anti-choice rebellion acted out for many years. I have every belief they would gladly use this occassion to show up to gloat this evening. They are certainly capable of the lowest forms of behavior. You may remember their absolutely loathesome images of grown, overweight, idiotic people crawling around on the sidewalk on all fours like babies in front of the women's healthcare centers.

Wichita also became the headquarters for Randall Terry, who drives the trucks around with aborted fetus images painted on the sides.

These people will stoop to murder, they would easily buzz this vigil to celebrate their victory.

13. This guy is a typical RW nut - stupid as shit
The car he was driving was registered in Johnson County, a suburb of Kansas City.

The guy drives to Wichita, which is in the south-central part of the state, commits his crime, and then TAKES THE INTERSTATE back to Johnson County!

Can we say, "I'm an ignorant knuckle-dragger, please catch me?"

I'm glad he's so dumb, because it made it easy to catch him. But with all of the rural highways around here, this guys takes the INTERSTATE!

He would have crossed over into Oklahoma, although I'm sure Kansas State Troopers were stationed at every possible KS/OK state line crossing. But it still would have been smarter than taking I-35 back to where the cops already knew he lived.

75. McVeigh was another RW dumb ass who took an interstate out of town
Stupid ass McVeigh had no plate on is car - wow, that is sure to attract the attention of a cop.

Long time Oklahoma Patrol officer Trooper Charlie Hanger had been dispatched to Oklahoma City. Like many law enforcement officers, he'd been summoned to provide whatever assistance he could.

Soon after, however, he received another order to remain in his usual patrol area Noble County. He turned around and headed north on I-35. He was about 75 miles from the disaster area when he noticed a beat-up 1977 Mercury Grand Marquis. What caught his attention was the yellow car's lack of a license plate.

He pulled the driver over and got out of his patrol car. Timothy McVeigh got out of the yellow junker and went to meet him.

Hanger wanted to know why McVeigh had no license plate. McVeigh explained he'd just bought the car. When Hanger asked if he had insurance, registration, or a bill of sale McVeigh explained everything was being mailed to his address. Then he handed over his driver's license.

It was then Hanger noticed a bulge under McVeigh's jacket. "What's that?" the cop asked. When McVeigh said it was a gun, the trooper held his own weapon to McVeigh's head. Then Hanger confiscated the 9-mm Glock that McVeigh was packing, as well as an ammo clip and a knife.

28. The press conference on KAKE didn't reveal the
person's name who was arrested. The person giving the press conference said that he'd be charged tomorrow, and the name would be released then.

He also made reference to internet conversations going on and that they were being looked into closely.

I guess we'll know tomorrow who this guy was, and we'll probably be able to discover a good deal about him after that. Until then, well, "sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof", I guess.

Source: KansasCity.com

Authorities have yet to release more information about the arrest. Wichita police have scheduled a 4 p.m. news conference to discuss the case.

Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. in the lobby of Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation. Witnesses, a city official and a police source confirmed Tiller was the victim.

35. I Can't Say I'm Against the Death Penalty
For this very reason. While I normally don't believe in it, I do believe there are certain circumstances where nothing else will do. What Dr. Tiller did for so many women in this country should never be forgotten. If this man sits in prison, I believe it will be forgotten. I would like to see a circus surround this so that MSM has to cover it and more people will be aware of the good Dr. Tiller did.

For a self-righteous, martyrdom-craving fanatic without remorse or forgiveness in heart, having to live in this life in prison without parole is far worse punishment than death.

sounds like pre-meditated murder. It was a planned ambush. He had to travel some distance to the scene. It wasn't a sudden crime of passion so no temporary insanity angle. Let's see what this wingnut has to say for himself.

But let's remember it's Kansas and the abortion politics are toxic, so you have a point.

52. A note about the human side of his work: I had a friend that went to Dr Tiller
It was the mid-90s. She and her husband were ecstatic when they found out she was pregnant. But as the pregnancy progressed, the ultrasound showed the baby was horribly deformed and would probably only live a few minutes after being born. Worse, to give birth naturally to this fetus would have put my friend's life at risk, due to its brain being swollen and enlarged. My friend and her husband were devastated, heartbroken--they would have done anything to save the life of their child had it been viable. But the choice came down to aborting the fetus or saving my friend's life--a no-brainer to anyone who's not a crazy fundie!

Anyway, my friend searched all over California for a doctor who could help her--when she told me the only one she could find was in Kansas, none of us could believe it! I remember saying then that I'd be wearing kevlar if I were him.

Just tragic. And of course, it was some middle-aged white man, who hasn't the first clue of what people like my friend have gone through!

68. The general public REALLY
needs to be educated about this!!! I have a woman friend who has a law degree plus an MBA and was against late-term abortions. I clued her in real quick...she had never thought about 'difficult' pregnancies...how fetuses die, get terrible deformities, horrid diseases and don't have a chance at life...only endangering the mother. (of course these rw 'christians' couldn't care less about women...they're only good for breeding....oh, and fetching beers).

54. There is a ticking timebomb, and I think we should waterboard this suspect and
find ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL his accomplices and contacts. Lets see who all is connected. It works right? I say we use non multiplechoice questions. Like, Is Newt Gingrich involved? I think 183 times should do it. Then, we can move along to military tribunals. Round all those witches, um, I mean terrorists up, and burn them at the stake. There could also be other doctors in danger. Maybe this is really connected to the hillbilly revolution. I have never seen a better case for waterboarding, due to a ticking timebomb. Lets roll.

57. The cold-blooded murder of Dr. Tiller is yet another strike by the anti-choice factions...
in their current war against women and their reproductive freedom.

Reproductive freedom is a right, not an option!:kick:

58. Lock him up in prison for life, use him as a poster boy for domestic terrorists
Tiller's murder was politically motivated, so I do believe it qualifies as terrorism.

73. possible link to operation rescue
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31029377/

The gunman fled, but a 51-year-old suspect was arrested some 170 miles away in suburban Kansas City three hours after the shooting, Wichita Deputy Police Chief Tom Stolz said. Johnson County sheriff's spokesman Tom Erickson identified the man in custody as Scott Roeder, who has not been charged in the slaying.

I then found this on a google search:

76. This is a terrorist crime...
as such, perhaps it will fall into Federal jurisdiction.

Would be nice if Randall Terry would be charged as an accessory.

None of these cowardly shooters ever have the guts to just stand there and wait for arrest.

79. Photo of killer in custody and news from Witchita Star Paper

The suspect in the killing of Wichita abortion provider George Tiller was driven away from the Fred Allenbrand Criminal Justice Complex on Sunday evening, May 31, 2009, near Gardner. The Johnson County Sheriff's office identified him as Scott P. Roeder.

-----

A man armed with a handgun shot Tiller once, according to the preliminary investigation. Three to four people saw the shooting.

Two men confronted the suspect and exchanged words with him, but police would not say what was said.

-----

Police also obtained a photo of the suspect, who had a prior conviction for criminal use of explosives, which was overturned on appeal, according to court records.

-----

The suspect's car was spotted shortly before 2 p.m. just south of Gardner by two Johnson County sheriff's deputies -- Andy Lento and Tyson Kilbey. The Sheriff's Office had suspected that the man would be coming back on I-35 to his home, and Kilbey and Lento waited for him.

80. Profile of the woman who shot Dr. Tiller in both arms another time:
http://blogs.kansas.com.nyud.net:8090/courts/files/2008/11/shelleyshannon.jpg

Rachelle Ranae "Shelley" Shannon (born 1956) is a Christian Pro-life activist from Grants Pass, Oregon, United States. She shot Dr. George Tiller outside his abortion clinic in Wichita, Kansas on August 19, 1993, shooting him in both arms.<1><2><3> She is serving time in FCI Dublin.<4> Her projected release date is November 7, 2018.

At the time she attacked Tiller, Shannon had been a pro-life activist for five years and had written letters of support to Michael Griffin, who murdered David Gunn. She called Griffin "the awesomest, greatest hero of our time." She traveled to the Wichita clinic, a site of frequent demonstrations by abortion-rights and pro-life activists, and shot Tiller with a semiautomatic pistol.<5>

At her trial in state court, she testified that there was nothing immoral about trying to kill Tiller. The jury deliberated for only an hour before convicting Shannon of attempted murder; she was sentenced to 11 years.<5><6>

Shannon signed the Army of God's statement in support of the actions of Paul Jennings Hill while incarcerated in Lansing, Kansas. <7>

On June 4, 1995, she pleaded guilty to setting fires at several abortion clinics in Oregon, California, Idaho and Nevada. She had been indicted by federal grand juries on 30 counts in connection with fires and acid attacks at nine clinics. Charges included arson, interference with commerce by force and interstate travel in aid of racketeering.<8><9> On September 9, 1995, U.S. Federal District Court Judge James A. Redden pronounced Shannon's sentence for these crimes. Departing upward from the applicable federal sentencing guidelines, the Court sentenced Shannon to 20 years in prison. The sentence was set to begin only after Shannon's ten-year incarceration for shooting Tiller is completed.<10>

Her daughter, Angela Shannon (born ca. 1974),<11> was prosecuted for sending a death threat in 1993 to George Woodward, a Milwaukee doctor who performed abortions. (The letter arrived on March 3, 1993—a week before the murder of David Gunn.) The elder Shannon attempted to take the blame for the death threat, but in view of Angela's fingerprints having been found on the letter, Angela was convicted and sentenced to 46 months' incarceration in 1997.<12>

In 1998, Shelley Shannon filed a lawsuit contending that the sewage system in the Kansas prison was inadequate, and that sewage backups created unhealthful conditions for the inmates. Her lawsuit was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Kathryn Vratil in Kansas City, Kansas. The dismissal was upheld by a 2-1 vote of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.<13>
