Rumsfeld: U.S. to Send 1, 500 - 2, 000 Troops to Haiti
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States plans to provide about 1,500 to 2,000 troops to serve in an international stability force totaling less than 5,000 troops in Haiti, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Monday.

President Bush on Sunday directed U.S. Marines to lead an international force to restore order and stability to Haiti after President Jean-Bertrand Aristide resigned in the face of an armed rebellion and fled to Africa.

During a Pentagon briefing, Rumsfeld said an international ``interim'' stability force in Haiti authorized by the United Nations ``will probably be less than 5,000 total,'' with the U.S. contribution what he described as ``a small fraction of that.''

He said, ``I don't know what the number will be, but for the sake of argument, say 1,500 or 2,000, or less. But time will tell. We'll have what's needed.''

1. Huh...

It was 500 this morning.

Two days ago, it was 50.

Are those troop estimates increasing on a logrithmic curve, or merely a geometric one? I'm always confused about the difference between the two.

2. I'd love to work for Rummy and ask for a "small" raise: just 30% to 40%
"1500 to 2000" out of 5000 is NOT a "small fraction" on my planet.

6. Why are they doing this?
The deed is done. The coup has been completed. Democracy is dead so what are the troops doing there now? They are supposed to defend Democracy not wallow in it's demise.

7. Sending them north south east or west
to the known unknown, or the unknown known, or the as yet unacquainted, or even to the strange and total wasteland that is Rumsfeld's sick, diseased brain.
