Gay GOP Group Challenges Bush on Marriage
Log Cabin Republicans to Air TV Ad in D.C., 7 States

By Howard Kurtz

In a dramatic break with President Bush, a prominent group of gay Republicans that supported him four years ago is launching a $1 million advertising campaign today attacking the administration for trying to ban same-sex marriage.

The ad, by the Log Cabin Republicans, uses grainy footage of Vice President Cheney saying during the 2000 campaign that the matter should be left to the states.

Bush's decision to endorse a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage was "the line in the sand" for the 27-year-old group, which has never run a campaign ad, said Executive Director Patrick Guerriero. He said he had warned the White House as Bush edged toward supporting an amendment that "despite our historic loyalty to the party and the president, we would be forced to speak out if gay and lesbian families were going to be used as wedge issues in swing states."

The group's move, which shatters the fragile alliance between the president and his strongest backers in the gay community, could undermine efforts to renew the "compassionate conservative" appeal he used four years ago.

The ad shows Cheney in the 2000 vice presidential debate, saying of gay marriage: "People should be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to enter into. . . . That matter is regulated by the states. I think different states are likely to come to different conclusions, and that's appropriate. I don't think there should necessarily be a federal policy in this area."

5. this is actually bigger than you can imagine
There are many within the glbt community that look to conservative groups such as the Log Cabin Republicans for their guidance in voting.

Like in "mainstream" America, there are many, many gay men and lesbians who vote Republican because that's how they were raised.

They don't have time to see who favors whom and who wants to cut which educational programs and veterans benefits and federal oversight of the environment and just who is it that wants to raise taxes on whom?!.

They just weren't raised to be conscious of politics and to trust the generations before them.

There is very much an image problem for the Democratic Party. I sure hope someone figures this out pretty soon.

7. Does anyone REALLY expect them to withhold their Bush endorsement?
In the end, they will happily accept whatever crumbs Bush throws their way.

8. Yes-Log Cabin Will Go Against Bush
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 01:59 AM by Erika
My gay stepson in Texas says Bush has competely alienated the Log Cabin Gays and the gay activist populations. He says what bothers his community the most is the wedge factor that Bush chooses to use. There will be few gay votes for Bush.

9. They won't endorse him unless he changes position on amendment...
and that means that they won't be supporting him. They certainly won't endorse someone else though. They didn't endorse Bush Sr. in 1992 either, and Dole almost lost it too when he returned their check, but then he re-accepted it and apologized. Bush Jr. got it in 2000 because of comments like the Cheney one featured in their ad.

10. I could actually see them endorsing Kerry, and probably
dissolving as the GOP has an extension of the fundamentalist right wing. I am not sure they can work within the party any more. Not really sure how much they have accomplished over the last decade.

Anybody aware of Log Cabin successes since the Newt infestation?
