Rodriguez-Cuellar race down to wire
03/10/2004

By T.A. BADGER / Associated Press

U.S. Rep. Ciro D. Rodriguez fell behind Democratic rival Henry Cuellar early in the District 28 primary, but the incumbent took a narrow lead with a strong showing in his hometown of San Antonio.

With 97 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday, state and county officials had Rodriguez with 23,546 votes, or 52 percent, while Cuellar of Laredo was at 22,089 votes, or 48 percent.

"Based on what I'm hearing, I'm feeling pretty optimistic," Rodriguez said late Tuesday night.
