Christian league leader apologizes for Web notice (asking for sexual pref)
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 02:41 PM by MaineDem
AUGUSTA, Maine — The leader of the Christian Civic League of Maine apologized Wednesday for a Web site item asking supporters for information about the sexual orientation of legislators and other political leaders.

Executive Director Michael Heath´s apology was issued amid sharply worded condemnations for his action by legislative leaders from both parties and by Gov. John Baldacci, who called it "an offense of the highest order."

Heath said the Web item had been removed and he was no longer seeking such information on lawmakers. He offered "an unqualified apology" while accepting full responsibility for his actions.

In his daily newsletter last Friday, Heath asked supporters for "tips, rumors, speculation and facts" about the sexual orientation of legislators and other political leaders, so the league could post the information on its Internet site.

The Maine Christian Civic League has been dangerous for as long as I can remember.

2. Those f#cknuts have a record...
...as long as my arm, from the censorship referendum in the mid-80's through the 90's referendum repealing ME's gay right law, to this.

Remember, Perot beat Bush I in this state.

The majority, perhaps the vast majority, of Maine conservatives are of a libertarian stripe, and could care less what their neighbors did as long as it doesn't scare the horses or affect real-estate tax rates.

The God-botherers don't run the party here -- the taxophobes do.

11. You are absolutely correct
These people are completely out of step with the people of Maine - even the most conservative Republicans.

I wish they would just go away and leave the rest of the State of Maine alone.

3. Sickening.
If you go to their website and click on "contact us," you can send this hateful man an e-mail and let him know what you think.

The apology on the web site is hardly "unqualified." He doesn't apologize to the GLBT community, to the citizens as a whole, or to God, in whose name he is making inexcusable comments.

8. The Passion of the Christ Gang
This is where the frenzy of politicized fundamentalism, armed with the swords of its prejudices and high on cultural crack like Gibson's movie, leads: straight to Salem. Straight to Kabul. Keen to organize a stoning.

Looking at Maine, we might ask: how much of American society will bend to Christian hate groups? How much longer will civil society be strong enough to force apologies from the likes of Michael Heath? If we don't renew liberal tolerance and liberal resistance - not natural resources, incidentally - we're going to be fucked by these toltalitarians. Today they apologize and crawl back into their holes; maybe tomorrow, as they grow bolder and we grow weaker, they won't.

It's a worthy challenge for America, really, for so long full of itself over its powers and destiny: can modernity resist being swallowed by primitivism?
