Salazar will run for Senate
Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar will announce his candidacy for U.S. Senate today, The Denver Post has learned.

Salazar will declare his intention to run for the seat being vacated by Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell at a 3 p.m. news conference today, according to his campaign organizer, Mike Stratton.

1. Uh oh
So now there are two big name Dems competing for the seat.

Anybody know who'd have the edge?

2. Well, Salazar has won office statewide
whereas Udall has only won in one congressional district. I'd give him the edge if for no other reason.

3. Salazar
I think there was a poll a year or so ago that said that Ken Salazar was the most popular Dem in the state.

Well.... now I think Rutt Bridges (my business aquaintence) should pull out and not waste his and his wife's money.

4. It might be good
since they will get more media coverage and people will get used to the names more and more.

5. Salazar will be the best candidate
Here in Denver, it's clear that Salazar can attract moderates and even some conservatives. He's worked successfully with rural conservatives on some issues. With Salazar in, it will be a real race.

6. With Bridges and Udall out
Salazar will have an easy race in the primary. He has national support and will be an excellent candidate. I would put this in the tossup category. If Kerry does have a wave, this will go our way (and I honestly believe that the Senate has just become an even playing field with Salazar's entrance).

8. I think Salazar will be the favorite
He got 58% in the race for AG in 2002. And he is also a fairly moderate democrat from the rural areas that Democrats need to win to win the seat. Also, the republicans will be divided. Bob Shaffer seems like he will run and reportedly the White House is leaning heavily on Bob Beauprez to run as well. And, Tom Tancredo is rumored to be planning to run also. So, I think that primary will hurt the republicans a lot against Salazar.

7. Who is Salazar?
I mean, what will he be like on the issues?

9. He's a good guy
5th generation Coloradoan - probably a little easier on the ranchers than the typical Dem would be, but otherwise a staunch environmentalist.

He's also the State AG, which means he fights for consumer issues. Don't know his national security profile.

He's a good guy ; bears a semi-resemblance to Phil Gramm, though.
