G.I. Seeks Conscientious Objector Status

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. (AP) -- A Florida soldier who refused to return to duty in Iraq turned himself in to military authorities on Monday, saying he would seek conscientious objector status.

Accompanied by his lawyer, Staff Sgt. Camilo Mejia, 28, surrendered at the base's gate to two military police officers, who drove him away.

A crowd of peace activists cheered Mejia and shouted encouragement: ``We love you!'' ``Go with God!''

1. I read the article this morning - and think he's courageous

especially with * in the most corrupt, vicious misAdministration ever. Hopefully, his notoriety will keep him safe, and will continue to allow him to speak out.

2. If he did not apply prior to the deployment order...

...and he failed to show up for his deployment, then it is cowardace in the face of the enemy as far as I am concerned.

3. He's going down hard they have to make sure of it or the gates

will be open for anyone of conscious to avoid being shrub fodder. He will never see daylight again.

5. Don't understand.

It seems that it took him a long time for him to decide if he was a conscientious objector. Maybe he shouldn't have joined in the first place. I don't understand him.
