French nutritionists give thumbs up to Big Mac
( oh , those kooky french! )

Friday, March 19, 2004 Posted: 9:50 AM EST (1450 GMT)

PARIS, France (Reuters) -- Want to stay fit and healthy?

Two top French nutritionists are telling people to go for a Big Mac and keep their fingers off the traditional French quiche.

In an unexpected message to a country priding itself on the superiority of its food, a new food guide praises the McDonald's burger for having a higher and healthier protein-to-fat ratio than France's Quiche Lorraine.

"Strangely enough, the products which are the most demonized are not necessarily the worst," Jean-Michel Cohen and Patrick Serog write in their book "Savoir Manger," in which they analyze 5,000 dishes available in shops and restaurants. .....

1. Um, how many people order fries and a shake w/quiche??
Anyways, the French don't think their food is healthier... just their eating habbits.

2. I doubt that most patrons of French restaurants are going to worry about
the "fat to protein" ratio of the entree. And how can you compare something that comes in a cardboard box to the dining experience of a fine restaurant? Eating at a restaurant isn't about calorie counting.

3. Ah yes, the Food and Drug Administration...
...has finally gotten through with their trash science and crossed international overseas borders. A Quiche Lorraine can contain as much protein as the cook wishes to put in it. Just increase the chopped ham, add a few egg whites along with the traditional ingredients and viola, tres bien, zee fat is neutralized and zee protein is enhanced and zee figure remains very French, not like zee lard ass Americans you see zuper-zizing zee combo!!! Uoo la la mon cher :loveya:

4. Nobody gets satire anymore.
I still can't believe that whole Jerry Lewis fiasco went over everybody's heads.

5. What do the French know about food?
I mean, I'll listen to them after they invent something as grand as Freedom Fries.

Till then, I'm stickin with my tofu and broccoli.

6. Looks like they have fat phobes in France too!
I would advise the French to keep eating their traditional diet because that's the regimen and lifestyle that's given them a far lower rate of cardiovascular disease than Americans and given the French women an astonishing life expectancy of 82.4 years -- this despite having similar so called risk factors (cholesterol, etc.). Don't fix something that's not broken. Especially don't trade in real cuisine (slow food) for highly processed McDonald's junk food.

7. It's the red wine that does it
The only way to survive the notoriously fatty French cuisine is to eat a diet high in resveratrol--a substance found in abundance in red wine. This lowers the cholesterol in the bloodstream.

It also helps if you're French--French people have evolved through hundreds of years of eating French food to be able to eat a diet consisting largely of French food, French wine and French cigarettes. The people who couldn't hack the diet died early, before their inferior, French-cuisine-intolerant genes could contaminate the gene pool.

9. don't give Mickey D's such ideas!
Or the next thing, they'll be offering their own version of "vin ordinaire" ... in "M"-emblazoned wax-paper cups, regular or "super-sized".

10. Mon Dieu!

Sacre bleu! Le MickeyD's blows.
