Teen's right to wear sweatshirt is restored
NEWPORT NEWS -- A Denbigh High School student prevented from wearing an anti-abortion sweatshirt in school last month by a school administrator now can wear it after a Michigan law center raised the possibility of a lawsuit.

An assistant principal told Daniel Goergen on Feb. 18 to remove the sweatshirt or turn it inside-out. Printed in white letters on the front of the black, hooded sweatshirt are the words "Abortion is homicide." The back reads "You will not silence my message / You will not mock my God / You will stop killing my generation."

"It was kind of irritating, it was bringing me down a little," Goergen said of the assistant principal's decision. "I respected (the assistant principal's) opinion and did what she said because she's an administrator. Then I got a lawyer to explain to her the right for me to wear it."

Many students at the school have shown support for his actions, he said.

1. I agree - unless the shirt was in "bad taste"
Like showing those famous fake fetus photos.

However, some brave souls should start sporting pro-choice shirts.

Doesn't look like this story mentions the T-shirt, but they sure talked about it at the press conference. Was on CNN tuesday or wednesday.

5. Good for him. I'm pro-choice, but he has every right to express his
beliefs. I'm glad that he was eventually allowed to wear the sweatshirt.

I may disagree with what you say, but I'll defend your right to say it.

6. I agree completely; but he shouldn't get upset if
I decide to wear a shirt that says, "I'll mock your fucking god anytime I want to, asshat."

7. Very similar
As one who fought some of these same battles about 35 years ago, it is interesting that many of the same points are made today. I was wondering when a backlash against the conformist backlash would occur. It was the wearing of armbands against the war (Viet Nam) that went to the Supreme Court. That one decision opened so much up. It is amazing to me thinking back on it, that the next battle was then facial hair and "long hair" (only matter for us boys).

9. Would you like a brownshirt with your sweatshirt, son?
Reading about these young Christian fascists doesn't inspire confidence that modernity can outlast the American hunger for medievalism!

They'll be voting in a few years. I hope you're all boning up on your witch-burning and glossolalia.

11. Ten bucks says this kid won't get laid in college either...
Let him wear the shirt. He has every right. I'm just amazed he is not home-schooled.
