ST. PETERSBURG - Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders is not a woman to mince words.
Every criminal in the United States has the right to a lawyer, she said Friday. Why doesn't every citizen have the right to be treated by a doctor?
"There is no such thing as "We can't afford it,' " Elders said in a news conference at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort. "We can afford to build "smart' bombs. We can afford to rebuild Iraq."
Since 1987, the United States has invested more money in jails than in schools, she said. The nation spends about $35,000 a year per inmate, she said, more than it costs to attend many colleges.
