Former Dutch Queen Juliana dead at 94
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, March 20 — Former Dutch Queen Juliana, who presided over the dismantling of the centuries-old Dutch empire and witnessed the birth of a social revolution during her 32-year reign of the Netherlands, died Saturday. She was 94.

Juliana, who spent most of her final years in seclusion, died in her sleep shortly before 6 a.m. at the royal palace in Soestdijk, about 30 miles southeast of Amsterdam, the government announced. Her doctors said she died of pneumonia, combined with a general deterioration of health.

I still have a stamp with her picture on it. Was in Amsterdam in 1983--bought one too many stamps for my postcards, and so I just kep it! She looks like a queen, you gotta give her that.

4. Was she the one who's wedding procession was interrupted...
...by a horde of mice?

(Just an old story I remember reading about the Netherlands in the '60's. I think Jan Cremer and/or the Provos had something to do with it.)

5. Good. Now the Dutch have absolutely no excuse about
continuing to gag the real reason why Juliana abdicated in 1980. The Dutch Official State Secrets Act was used to keep the country in blissful ignorance. About time they did a DNA test on "Quen Beatrix" too....

11. Yes, what's this all about?
I'm familiar with the various doings of the Dutch royal family, since my great-grandmother used to buy German equivalents of People Magazine, and I used to read them for language practice when I was studying German.

But I never heard anything about Beatrix not being the real Beatrix, nor was I able to find anything remotely suggestive of that idea on Google.

9. at the very same day
the Dutch government anounced an investigation to see if police and justice dept need more powers to fight terrorism, and 'experts' anounced we should now integrate into out lives the possibility of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands.
Probably for some time to come, the old Queen mother won't rest peacefully.

12. Nice encyclopedia article
All the nice things. All the dirt. The Dutch monarchy has a habit of abdicating in favor of younger rulers. The problem Juliana had was her daughter. Never heard anything about the "ringer" story though. Problems enough.

13. H.R.H. Princess Juliana
Seldom was the birth of an heir to the throne so eagerly awaited as the arrival of Juliana on April 30th 1909. Her mother, Queen Wilhelmina, had remained childless during the first eight years of her marriage to prince Hendrik van Mecklenburg-Schwerin. As historian (and royal biographer) Jan Kikkert points out, the long-awaited birth of an heir to the throne brought a sense of relief.
