WASHINGTON - Sales at U.S. retailers rose more strongly than expected in March as consumer stepped up purchases of vehicles and wide range of goods, government data showed on Wednesday, suggesting a broadening of the manufacturing-led economic recovery.

The Commerce Department said total retail sales jumped 1.6 percent, the largest increase since November, from an upwardly revised 0.5 percent rise in February. Sales in February were previously reported to have gained 0.3 percent.

Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast retail sales increasing 1.2 percent last month. Compared to February last year, sales were 7.6 percent higher.

4. I will do my part in April. We need a new computer
This is good news, especially the building equipment numbers. I've seen Help Wanted signs around town (at a cement making facility and an asphalt company). Good indicators that their are jobs in the future.

we spent some money when we got ours back.

13. If you're worried about creating jobs for foreigners, be glad you don't live in Canada or France.
In Canada imports constitute 31% of their economy. They are 25% of the French economy. In the US imports represent 11% of the economy, so more of our spending will stay at home than would be the case for a Canadian or a French citizen. The two biggest sources of our imports: China (15%) and Canada (11%).

12. You're cavalier dismissiveness prooves that you're the opposite of what you think I am.
What flavor is that Kool Aid today?

I am not about perfection. Search my username and you will see that I have ALWAYS advocated for Reality and I have interacted on behalf of patience and understanding what exactly the President has to deal with.

It would behoove who/what-ever you're shilling for to get to know a poster a little better before you dismiss them; your response was not only stylistically cliche, it was STUPID, if just simply because what goes around comes around.

22. I love how anybody who is positive is branded a Kool Aid drinker
Once upon a time we'd reserve that for braindead freepers, but now it's slapped on anybody who actually sees some good things happening.

18. Did someone post that everything "was fine"?
Of course everything isn't fine but nothing can get shot down by a segment of DU faster than any economic indicator that shows improvement in the economy. Things aren't going be to "fine" for a long time but a gradually improving economy is good for everyone.

I don't think any country in the world is fine! There's a lot worse off than us.

25. Some people apparently expect the recovery is going to go vertical to positive infinity
Instead we're obviously witnessing a much more gradual thing, which is to be expected. Good thing after good thing keep coming out, yet the same people take a crap on every positive thread as if nothing is ever enough. Yes, we have a lot of ground left to recover, but we're not going to get there overnight. We are heading in the right direction. Jobs have been a problem since the .com burst. We haven't kept up with population growth since Clinton was in office.

16. Yup, good news for china
I remember back before the '04 elections, good ole Pat Buchannan saying that Bush couldn't take credit for all the jobs he had created, because they were all in China.

17. Maybe not. 11% of our economy is imports and 15% of those come from China
(a little more than Canada's from which we get 11% of our imports).

It could be worse. In Canada imports are 31% of their economy and 54% of those come from the US. Just imagine how many "foreigners'" jobs Canada creates with its spending! ;)
