G-P braces for loss of 200 jobs
Posted Mar. 20, 2004 Green Bay Wisconsin-- The Georgia Pacific company

McCollister confirmed Friday that 200 jobs will be eliminated at the mill, through attrition if possible but through layoffs if necessary. Most of the 2,194 hourly workers at the mill can apply for one of three separation options, though McCollister acknowledged that the oldest and youngest workers are the most likely to be affected.

McCollister said retailers have been squeezing profit out of suppliers instead of from consumers. As a result, producers have not been able to raise prices.

In addition, China is buying large amounts of recycled paper, which is forcing prices upward.

He said estimates are Chinese purchases will continue to increase more than 5 percent per year for some time.

My Take---------This is th largest Co. in Green Bay. They are headed out of town---this is only the beginning. You will soon be wiping your ass with Chinese toilet paper-- or maybe none at all if you can't afford it.

1. The lumber industry - what's left of it...
is one of the biggest industries in my neck of the woods. This does not bode well for our area. Mills are closing left and right; I can think of 5 in the surrounding towns that have closed in the last year and a half. Small mills but job losses just the same.

2. "Retailers squeezing out profit"
Thanks, Wal-Mart. They are driving all the manufacturing jobs overseas with their strong-arm tactics.

3. Great Analysis
I didn't rave on about that before, but you absolutely hit the nail on the head.

For a while I thought companies were just moving to China for cheap labor. Then I realized why would the Chinese allow this. They would want their own companies free from Ken Lay, Skilling and guys like them.

No, Walmart controls the wholesale prices of consumer goods in this country, better than John D. Rockefeller controlled the oil monopoly in the early 1900's

7. Crap!

I work in tissue converting at the Palatka Fl plant. I wonder if these layoffs will start going company wide?

I also wonder how this will effect the contract negotiations coming up in a couple of months. These are good paying union jobs that are very hard to come by.

Thank you Mr. Bush, your "recovery" is doing wonders for the american worker!

8. They are definitely downsizing
No word at the East River/Green Bay plant yet either , but I have friends there and everyone is on pins and needles. Especially since all of the pulp has to be shipped in.

At the West Side plant, this has been a rumor for weeks. They use recycled paper there.

I guess Walmart really controls the wholesale price of tissue

9. Big GP plant just shut down in my area

About a year or so ago, after years of steady lay-offs. Have to say we won't miss the pollution, but many were hurt by the job loss. Of course, they all hate the environmentalists for cheering the closure. I felt it better taste to cheer in private, myself, & express sincere condolences in public.
