Predator priests shuffled around globe

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - There he was, five decades later, the priest who had raped Joe Callander in Massachusetts. The photo in the Roman Catholic newsletter showed him with a smile across his wrinkled face, near-naked Amazon Indian children in his arms and at his feet.

The Rev. Mario Pezzotti was working with children and supervising other priests in Brazil.

It's not an isolated example.

In an investigation spanning 21 countries across six continents, The Associated Press found 30 cases of priests accused of abuse who were transferred or moved abroad. Some escaped police investigations. Many had access to children in another country, and some abused again.

3. Horrific

If I were a Catholic parent I wouldn't let my kid anywhere near ANY priest.

4. and that's a challenge too...
If a Catholic parent, sits in a Catholic Church with their children--listening
to sermons and taking communion from a priest--a parent may not leave the child
alone with the priest. However, that child is learning to respect that priest
as an authority figure. There is a sense of trust and respect that is being
fostered.

So, even though a parent may not leave a child alone with a priest, that is a
dangerous game to play--behaving in ways that solidify trust between a potential
pedophile and your child.

As the child is older---they may want to join the choir, be an altar boy or
attend youth activities. What then?

Do you tell your child..."Well, the Catholic Church that I've been bringing you to for
the past decade or so has had a rampant problem with priests abusing children
and then covering it up and allowing them to abuse more children. For years, the
priests called the victims liars and attacked them, in order to protect themselves...so
I don't think it's a good idea if you attend these Church events. You might not be safe."

The problem is the Church Hierarchy--from the Pope, to the Bishops to the Cardinals. If
your child was sexually abused--it would most likely happen due to a serial pedophile
priest who has been protected by the Church higher ups. Your child is vulnerable in that
Church, simply because the hierarchy does not and will not protect children from child
rapists. That's been their modus operandi for decades.

The Catholic Church hierarchy is still making excuses, justifications and rationalizing
all of this. Recently, a priest blamed kids for their own abuse--by suggesting that they
are sexual and wanting the abuse.

You're taking a risk when you walk into a Catholic Church with a child.

12. You're missing the point...
The point is, the Catholic Church hierarchy is an enabler of pedophile priests. This increases the risks exponentially. The hierarchy deliberately shuffles serial abusers from place to place, and because they keep them in circulation, the numbers of serial abusers in the Catholic priesthood are almost certainly greater than you will find in the general population. Furthermore, Catholic priests hold a unique sway over the adherents of their religion that really isn't present in other walks of life. When you combine that with the fact that Catholic priest pedophiles are given numerous "get-out-of-jail-free" cards, you are left with a group of pedophiles who have been emboldened, and who, therefore, pose more risk. You really have no way of knowing whether the guy you're placing on a pedestal for your children is one of them or not.

7. In this story from the BBC, the Pope says the Church needs to do penance.
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 09:23 AM by Stuart G
from the story....

Pope Benedict XVI has called on Roman Catholics to "do penance" for their sins, an apparent reference to the recent child sexual abuse scandal.

What about the Pope???? And his role in all of this???

9. Well, It's Easier Than Trafficking The Victims

Most human trafficking rings do it the hard way, by transporting the victims.

This organization seems to have figured out that it is easier to move the abusers around, and keep the kids where they are.

Pretty clever, really.

16. When I read one story after another about this..
I wonder what kind of people are making these decisions on these predators.

One story after another, different times, names, etc...still out there, protected and still working with kids.

This series of stories is as disturbing as any. These are supposed to be religious people ?
