Iraqi authorities dig up mass grave in northern Iraq

Iraqi authorities unearthed Thursday a mass grave with 14 bodies of people believed to be killed earlier by al-Qaida militants in Salahudin province, a provincial police source said.

The bodies were found in Shinana, an open area located to the west of Samarra city, some 120 km north of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"The bodies were badly decomposed as experts believed the victims were killed more than a year ago," the source said.

Many mass graves have been discovered in Iraq during the lull in violence in the past two years that followed sectarian strife and insurgency which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
